Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, there was a bhikṣu named Samīlīti who went to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, sat to one side, and said to the Buddha, “World-Honored One! What is meant by the world? What is called the world?”

The Buddha told Samīlīti, “It means the eye, form, eye consciousness, eye contact, and the feeling that arises from eye contact as a condition, which is experienced internally as either painful, pleasant, or neither painful nor pleasant. The ear, nose, tongue, body, mind, dharmas, mental consciousness, mental contact, and the feeling that arises from mental contact as a condition, which is experienced internally as either painful, pleasant, or neither painful nor pleasant, is called the world. Why is that? The arising of the six sense bases is the arising of contact, and so on up to the arising of the great mass of suffering.

Samīlīti! If there is no eye, no form, no eye consciousness, no eye contact, and no feeling that arises from eye contact as a condition, which is experienced internally as either painful, pleasant, or neither painful nor pleasant; if there is no ear, nose, tongue, body, mind, dharmas, mental consciousness, mental contact, and no feeling that arises from mental contact as a condition, which is experienced internally as either painful, pleasant, or neither painful nor pleasant, then there is no world, and the world is not established. Why is that? The cessation of the six sense bases is the cessation of contact, and so on up to the cessation of the great mass of suffering.

Having spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus were delighted and practiced accordingly.

Just as in the world, so too are sentient beings, so too is Māra, and so it is said.
