Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | 一时，佛住舍卫国祇树给孤独园。 |
At that time, there was a bhikṣu named Samīlīti who went to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, sat to one side, and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! What is meant by the emptiness of the world?" | 时，有比丘名三弥离提，往诣佛所，稽首佛足，退坐一面，白佛言：「世尊！所谓世间空，云何名为世间空？」 |
The Buddha told Samīlīti, "The eye is empty, the constant, eternal, and unchanging is empty, and the self is empty. Why is this? This is the nature of things. If it is form, eye consciousness, eye contact, or the feeling produced by eye contact as a condition, whether it is pleasant, unpleasant, or neither pleasant nor unpleasant, it is also empty, the constant, eternal, and unchanging is empty, and the self is empty. Why is this? This is the nature of things. The same is true for the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. This is called the empty world." | 佛告三弥离提：「眼空，常、恒、不变易法空，我所空。所以者何？此性自尔，若色、眼识、眼触、眼触因缘生受，若苦、若乐、不苦不乐，彼亦空，常、恒、不变易法空，我所空。所以者何？此性自尔。耳、鼻、舌、身、意亦复如是，是名空世间。」 |
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣu Samīlīti heard what the Buddha had said and joyfully practiced it. | 佛说此经已，三弥离提比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
