Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. | |
At that time, Venerable Śāriputra was on Vulture Peak. | |
At that time, there was a young householder named Sūrpāraka who traveled around every day. He went to Vulture Peak and approached Śāriputra. He bowed his head at Śāriputra's feet and sat to one side. |
At that time, Śāriputra said to Sūrpāraka, "If śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas do not truly know form, do not truly know the origin of form, do not truly know the cessation of form, and do not truly know the path leading to the cessation of form, then, Sūrpāraka, you should know that these śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas are not able to eliminate form. In this way, śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas do not truly know feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, do not truly know the origin of consciousness, do not truly know the cessation of consciousness, and do not truly know the path leading to the cessation of consciousness, and therefore are not able to eliminate consciousness. |
Sūrpāraka! If śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas truly know form, truly know the origin of form, truly know the cessation of form, and truly know the path leading to the cessation of form, then, Sūrpāraka, you should know that these śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas are able to eliminate form. In this way, Sūrpāraka! If śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas truly know feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, truly know the origin of consciousness, truly know the cessation of consciousness, and truly know the path leading to the cessation of consciousness, then, Sūrpāraka, you should know that these śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas are able to eliminate consciousness. |
"Sūrpāraka! What do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent?" | 「 |
He replied, "Impermanent." | |
He asked again, "If it is impermanent, is it suffering?" | |
He replied, "It is suffering." | |
Śāriputra said, "If form is impermanent and suffering, it is a changing and transforming phenomenon. Could a noble disciple see form as being the self, different from the self, or abiding in the self?" |
He replied, "No." |
"Śūrpamātra, is feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness permanent or impermanent?" |
He replied, "Impermanent." | |
He asked again, "If it is impermanent, is it suffering?" | |
He replied, "It is suffering." | |
He asked again, "If it is impermanent and suffering, is it a changing and transforming phenomenon? Do the noble disciples see and recognize it as self, different from self, or as existing in self?" |
He replied, "No." |
Sūratna, you should know that form, whether past, future, or present, whether internal or external, whether gross or subtle, whether beautiful or ugly, whether far or near, is not self, not different from self, and not in self. This is called true knowledge. Sūratna, the noble disciples generate disgust, detachment, and liberation towards form, and are liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and distress. |
So it is with feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness - whether past, future, or present, whether internal or external, whether gross or subtle, whether beautiful or ugly, whether far or near, all consciousness is not self, not different from self, and not in self. This is called true knowledge. Sūratna, the noble disciples generate disgust, detachment, and liberation towards consciousness, and are liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and distress. |
At that time, Sūratna, having heard what Śāriputra said, was delighted and joyful. He bowed and left. | |
