Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. | |
At that time the World-Honored One addressed the bhikṣus, saying: "The Tathāgata has accomplished the ten powers, attained the four fearlessnesses, knows the abodes of the past buddhas, and is able to turn the wheel of the Dharma in the great assembly, proclaiming: 'Because this exists, that exists; because this arises, that arises. That is to say, conditioned by ignorance, there are karmic formations...' and so on, in detail, up to 'the great mass of suffering arises, the great mass of suffering ceases.' Bhikṣus! This is the manifestation of the true teaching, which cuts off the flow of birth and death, and so on, up to the full manifestation of that person. Thus, the manifestation of the true teaching cuts off the flow of birth and death, and is sufficient to cause a good man of right faith to renounce the household life, practice diligently, abide without negligence, and diligently practice the path in the true Dharma and Vinaya, with skin, sinews, and bones standing out, blood and flesh dried up; if he has not yet attained what he should attain, he does not abandon earnest effort, but practices with firm resolve and endurance. Why is this? Because dwelling in laziness and suffering gives rise to various evil and unwholesome dharmas, which bind one to future existence, burning and increasing, and in future lives one is born, ages, falls ill, and dies, losing the great meaning. But for one who diligently dwells alone, various evil and unwholesome dharmas do not arise, and the bonds of future existence do not burn and increase. In future lives, birth, aging, illness, and death do not increase, and the great meaning is fulfilled, attaining the supreme field of the teaching. That is to say, in the presence of the great teacher, personally receiving the teaching, attaining the peace of nirvāṇa, the right path to bodhi, the well-gone, and right enlightenment. Therefore, bhikṣus! You should observe self-benefit, benefiting others, and benefiting both self and others, diligently practicing and studying. I now renounce the household life, not foolishly or deludedly, with fruit and happiness. Those who make offerings of clothing, food and drink, bedding, and medicine will all attain great fruit, great merit, and great benefit. You should train in this way." |
Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha addressed the bhikṣus, saying: "The Tathāgata has accomplished the ten powers, attained the four fearlessnesses, knows the abodes of the past buddhas, and is able to turn the wheel of the Dharma in the great assembly, proclaiming: 'Because this exists, that exists; because this arises, that arises. |
