Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
At one time the Buddha was staying in the Deer Park at the Sage's Place of Practice in Benares. | 一时，佛住波罗［木＊奈］仙人住处鹿野苑中。 |
At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "There are four noble truths. What are the four? They are the noble truth of suffering, the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering. If a bhikṣu knows and understands the noble truth of suffering, knows and abandons the noble truth of the origin of suffering, knows and realizes the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and knows and cultivates the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering." | 尔时，世尊告诸比丘：「有四圣谛。何等为四？谓苦圣谛、苦集圣谛、苦灭圣谛、苦灭道迹圣谛。若比丘于苦圣谛当知、当解，于集圣谛当知、当断，于苦灭圣谛当知、当证，于苦灭道迹圣谛当知、当修。」 |
Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha finished what he had to say. The bhikṣus, having heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced and received it respectfully. | 佛说此经已，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
