Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Deer Park at the Sage's Abode in the country of Varanasi. | |
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the bhikṣus, saying, "There are four qualities that are accomplished, which are called the great king's medicine. They are the king's equipment and the king's share. What are the four? First, knowing well the illness; second, knowing well the source of the illness; third, knowing well the remedy for the illness; fourth, knowing well that after the illness is cured, it will not recur in the future. What is meant by the good doctor knowing the illness well? It means that the good doctor knows well various kinds of illnesses. This is called the good doctor knowing the illness well. What is meant by the good doctor knowing the source of the illness well? It means that the good doctor knows well that this illness arises from wind, phlegm, saliva, cold, present conditions, or seasonal factors. This is called the good doctor knowing the source of the illness well. What is meant by the good doctor knowing the remedy for the illness well? It means that the good doctor knows well various kinds of illnesses and knows how to treat them with ointments, emetics, purges, nasal irrigation, fumigation, and sweating. This is called the good doctor knowing the remedy for the illness well. What is meant by the good doctor knowing that after the illness is cured, it will not recur in the future? It means that the good doctor treats various kinds of illnesses well, completely eradicating them, so that they will not recur in the future. This is called the good doctor knowing that after the illness is cured, it will not recur in the future. |
"The Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One is the great king of physicians, accomplishing four virtues to cure the illnesses of sentient beings, also like this. What are the four? It means that the Tathāgata knows this is the noble truth of suffering and knows it as it is, knows this is the noble truth of the origin of suffering and knows it as it is, knows this is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering and knows it as it is, knows this is the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering and knows it as it is. Bhikṣus! Those worldly physicians do not know the fundamental remedies for birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and distress as they are. The Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, the great king of physicians, knows the fundamental remedies for birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and distress as they are. Therefore, the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One is called the great king of physicians." |
Having spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha said and joyfully upheld it. |
