Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Deer Park at the Sage's Abode in the country of Varanasi.

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "If the sun and moon did not appear in the world, all the stars would also not appear in the world. Day and night, half a month, a month, seasons, years, moments, and instants would all not be apparent. The world would always be dark, without any illumination. There would only be a long night of pure great darkness and suffering appearing in the world. If the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One did not appear in the world, the noble truths of suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the path to the cessation of suffering would not be taught and would not appear in the world. The world would be blind and without any illumination. In this way, a long night of pure great darkness would appear in the world.

If the sun and moon appear in the world, all the stars will also appear, and day and night, half a month, a month, seasons, years, moments, and instants will all appear in the world. There will be long-lasting illumination in the world.

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha said to the bhikṣus, "The bhikṣus should know that the appearance of the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One is of great benefit to the world.
