Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
Thus have I heard: | 一时，佛住王舍城迦兰陀竹园。时，有众多比丘集于食堂，思惟世间而思惟。 |
At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing the thoughts in the minds of the bhikṣus, went to the dining hall, spread his seat, and sat down. He told the bhikṣus: "You bhikṣus should not contemplate worldly thoughts. Why is that? Contemplating worldly thoughts is not beneficial, not in accordance with the Dharma, not in accordance with the holy life, not wisdom, not insight, and does not lead to nirvāṇa. You should contemplate correctly: 'This is the noble truth of suffering, this is the noble truth of the origin of suffering, this is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, this is the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering.' Why is that? Such contemplation is beneficial, in accordance with the Dharma, in accordance with the holy life, correct wisdom, correct insight, and leads to nirvāṇa. | 尔时，世尊知诸比丘心之所念，往诣食堂，敷座而坐，告诸比丘：「汝等比丘慎莫思惟世间思惟。所以者何？世间思惟非义饶益，非法饶益，非梵行饶益，非智、非觉，不顺涅槃。汝等当正思惟：『此苦圣谛、此苦集圣谛、此苦灭圣谛、此苦灭道迹圣谛。』所以者何？如此思惟则义饶益、法饶益、梵行饶益，正智、正觉、正向涅槃。 |
In the past, there was a man who left Rājagṛha and sat in meditation by the side of the Kūṭadanta Pond, contemplating worldly thoughts. While contemplating, he saw four kinds of armies - elephant troops, cavalry, chariot troops, and infantry - countless and innumerable, all entering a single lotus hole. Having seen this, he thought: 'I am insane and deranged. What does not exist in the world, I now see.' At that time, not far from the pond, there was another large crowd gathered together. The man went to the crowd and said: 'People, I am now insane, I am now deranged. What does not exist in the world, I now see.' At that time, the large crowd all said that the man was insane and deranged, and what does not exist in the world, he saw. | 「过去世时，有一士夫出王舍城，于拘𫄨罗池侧正坐思惟——世间思惟。当思惟时，见四种军——象军、马军、车军、步军，无量无数，皆悉入于一藕孔中。见已，作是念：『我狂失性，世间所无，而今见之。』尔时，去池不远，更有大众一处聚集。时，彼士夫诣大众所语言：『诸人，我今发狂，我今失性，世间所无，而我今见，如上广说。』时，彼大众皆谓士夫狂发失性，世间所无，而彼见之。」 |
The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "That man was not insane or deranged. What he saw was true. Why is that? At that time, not far from the Kūṭadanta Pond, there were devas and asuras who raised four kinds of armies and fought in the sky. At that time, the devas won and the asura armies were defeated. They retreated and entered a single lotus hole in the pond. Therefore, bhikṣus! You should be careful not to contemplate the world. Why is that? Contemplating the world is not beneficial, not in accordance with the Dharma, not in accordance with the holy life, not wisdom, not insight, and does not lead to nirvāṇa. You should contemplate the four noble truths. What are the four? The noble truth of suffering, the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering." | 佛告比丘：「然彼士夫非狂失性，所见真实。所以者何？尔时，去拘𫄨罗池不远，有诸天阿修罗兴四种军，战于空中。时，诸天得胜，阿修罗军败，退入彼池一藕孔中。是故，比丘！汝等慎莫思惟世间。所以者何？世间思惟非义饶益，非法饶益，非梵行饶益，非智、非觉，非正向涅槃，当思惟四圣谛。何等为四？苦圣谛、苦集圣谛、苦灭圣谛、苦灭道迹圣谛。」 |
Having spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus were delighted and practiced accordingly. | 佛说此经已，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
