SA 417（四一七） 如如

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha.

At that time the World-Honored One said to the bhikṣus, "Do you uphold the four noble truths that I have spoken?"

Then a bhikṣu rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, bared his right shoulder, bowed to the Buddha, joined his palms, and said to the Buddha, "Yes, World-Honored One, I uphold the four noble truths that you have spoken."

The Buddha said to the bhikṣu, "How do you uphold the four noble truths that I have spoken?"

The bhikṣu said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, you have spoken of the noble truth of suffering, which I uphold. As it is, not apart from the way it is, not different from the way it is, true, real, genuine, not mistaken, this is what the noble ones know as the noble truth of suffering. World-Honored One, you have spoken of the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering. As it is, not apart from the way it is, not different from the way it is, true, real, genuine, not mistaken, this is what the noble ones know as the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering. These are the four noble truths spoken by the World-Honored One, which I uphold."

The Buddha said to the bhikṣu, "Excellent! Excellent! You truly uphold the four noble truths that I have spoken, as they are, not apart from the way they are, not different from the way they are, true, real, genuine, not mistaken. This is called a bhikṣu truly upholding my four noble truths."

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha said to the bhikṣus, "Excellent! Excellent!" The bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's teaching, rejoiced and upheld it.
