Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. At that time, Venerable Śāriputra was on Vulture Peak.

At that time, there was a bhikṣu named Candraprabha, a disciple of Devadatta. He went to Venerable Śāriputra, exchanged greetings and pleasantries, and then stood to one side. Standing to one side, Venerable Śāriputra asked Bhikṣu Candraprabha, "Does the bhikṣu Devadatta teach the Dharma to the bhikṣus?"

Bhikṣu Candraprabha replied, "He teaches the Dharma."

Venerable Śāriputra asked Bhikṣu Candraprabha, "How does Devadatta teach the Dharma?"

Bhikṣu Candraprabha said to Venerable Śāriputra, "Devadatta teaches the Dharma like this: 'Bhikṣus, cultivate the mind through the Dharma. Such bhikṣus can declare for themselves: "I have already abandoned desire and attained liberation from the five sense pleasures."'"

Śāriputra said to Bhikṣu Candraprabha, "Why doesn't Devadatta teach the Dharma like this: 'Bhikṣus, cultivate the mind well through the Dharma. Liberate the mind from desire, anger, and delusion. Attain the Dharma of non-greed, non-hatred, and non-delusion. Do not return to the realms of desire, form, or formlessness. Such bhikṣus can declare for themselves: "My births are exhausted, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, and I know for myself that I will not be subject to future lives."'"

Bhikṣu Candraprabha said, "He cannot, Venerable Śāriputra!"

At that time, Venerable Śāriputra said to Bhikṣu Candraprabha, "If there is a bhikṣu who cultivates the mind well through the Dharma, he can liberate the mind from desire, anger, and delusion. Attaining the Dharma of non-greed, non-hatred, and non-delusion, such a bhikṣu can declare for himself: 'My births are exhausted, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, and I know for myself that I will not be subject to future lives.'"

"It is like a village near a large stone mountain, uncut, unbroken, unpierced, thick and solid. Even if an eastern wind comes, it cannot move it, nor can it pass through to the west. Similarly, winds from the south, west, north, and the four intermediate directions cannot topple it, nor can they pass through. In the same way, a bhikṣu who cultivates the mind well through the Dharma, who is free from a mind of desire, anger, and delusion, who attains the Dharma of non-greed, non-hatred, and non-delusion, such a bhikṣu can declare for himself: 'My births are exhausted, the holy life has been established, what was to be done has been done, and I know for myself that I will not be subject to future lives.'"

"It is like a copper pillar or iron pillar deeply embedded in the ground, firmly built, which cannot be toppled by winds from the four directions.

"It is like a stone pillar sixteen cubits long, eight cubits of which are embedded in the ground, which cannot be toppled by winds from the four directions.

"It is like fire burning what is not yet burned, and having burned it does not burn again.

Having spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus were delighted and practiced accordingly.
