Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. At that time, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was on Vulture Peak Mountain in Rājagṛha.

At that time, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana addressed the bhikṣus, saying: "Once, the World-Honored One was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. At that time, I was staying on Vulture Peak Mountain in Rājagṛha. While alone in a quiet place, I thought: 'What is meant by the noble silence?' I further thought: 'If a bhikṣu ceases to have perception and contemplation, with inner purity and single-mindedness, the samādhi of non-perception and non-contemplation arises, giving rise to joy and pleasure, and he dwells in perfect fulfillment in the second dhyāna, this is called the noble silence.' I further thought: 'I should now also dwell in the noble silence, ceasing to have perception and contemplation, with inner purity and single-mindedness, the samādhi of non-perception and non-contemplation arises, giving rise to joy and pleasure, and I shall dwell in perfect fulfillment, dwelling in it for a long time; having dwelt in it for a long time, the mind with perception and contemplation will arise again.' At that time, the World-Honored One knew my thoughts. He disappeared from the bamboo grove monastery and appeared before me on Vulture Peak Mountain, saying to me: 'Maudgalyāyana! You should dwell in the noble silence, do not be negligent.' Having heard the World-Honored One's words, I then again ceased to have perception and contemplation, with inner purity and single-mindedness, the samādhi of non-perception and non-contemplation arose, giving rise to joy and pleasure, and I dwelt in perfect fulfillment in the second dhyāna. In this way, a second and a third time, the Buddha also instructed me twice: 'You should dwell in the noble silence, do not be negligent.' I then again ceased to have perception and contemplation, with inner purity and single-mindedness, the samādhi of non-perception and non-contemplation arose, giving rise to joy and pleasure, and I dwelt in perfect fulfillment in the third dhyāna.

"If one truly speaks of a Buddha's child born from the Buddha's mouth, born from the Dharma, and inheriting the Buddha's Dharma, then I am that person. Why is that? I am a Buddha's child, born from the Buddha's mouth, born from the Dharma, and inheriting the Buddha's Dharma. With little effort, I attained dhyāna, liberation, samādhi, and samāpatti. It is like the eldest son of a wheel-turning sage king, who, although not yet enthroned, has already inherited the king's Dharma and can enjoy the five kinds of sensual pleasures without much effort. I am also like this. As a Buddha's child, without much effort, I attained dhyāna, liberation, samādhi, and samāpatti. The World-Honored One came to me three times in one day with his supernormal powers and gave me three instructions, establishing me in the state of a great person."

Having spoken this sūtra, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, the bhikṣus, having heard what was said, rejoiced and upheld it.
