Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. At that time, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was on Vulture Peak Mountain in Rājagṛha. | |
At that time, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana addressed the bhikṣus, saying: "Once, the World-Honored One was staying in Rājagṛha, while I was staying on Vulture Peak Mountain. While alone in a quiet place, I had this thought: 'What is called the holy abode?' I further thought: 'If a bhikṣu does not contemplate all characteristics, and abides in the formless concentration of mind, having realized it with the body, this is called the holy abode.' I thought: 'I should abide in this holy abode, not contemplating all characteristics, and abiding in the formless concentration of mind. Having realized it with the body, I will abide in it for a long time.' Having abided in it for a long time, a mind with characteristics arose. At that time, the World-Honored One knew my thoughts. In the time it takes for a strong man to bend and stretch his arm, he used his supernormal powers to disappear from the bamboo grove monastery and appeared before me on Vulture Peak Mountain. He said to me: 'Maudgalyāyana! You should abide in the holy abode, do not be negligent.' Having heard the World-Honored One's instruction, I immediately left all characteristics, and abided in the formless concentration of mind, having realized it with the body. In this way, up to three times, the World-Honored One also came three times to instruct me: 'You should abide in the holy abode, do not be negligent.' Having heard the instruction, I left all characteristics, and abided in the formless concentration of mind, having realized it with the body. |
"Venerable ones! If one truly speaks of a Buddha's child, then I am one born from the Buddha's mouth, born from the Dharma, and having received a share of the Buddha's teachings. Why is this? I am a Buddha's child, born from the Buddha's mouth, born from the Dharma, and having received a share of the Buddha's teachings. With little effort, I attained dhyāna, liberation, samādhi, and samāpatti. It is like the crown prince of a wheel-turning sage king, who, although not yet enthroned, has already received the king's teachings and can attain the five kinds of sensual pleasures without much effort. I am also like this. As a Buddha's child, without much effort, I attained dhyāna, liberation, samādhi, and samāpatti. In one day, the World-Honored One came to me three times with his supernormal powers and instructed me three times, establishing me in the state of a great person." |
Having spoken this sūtra, the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, the bhikṣus, and the others all rejoiced and practiced accordingly. | |
