Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
Thus have I heard: | 一时，佛住王舍城迦兰陀竹园。时，有四十天子来诣尊者大目犍连所，稽首作礼，退坐一面。 |
Then the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the celestial beings, "Excellent! Celestial beings, you have accomplished the unshakable faith in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha." | 时，尊者大目犍连语诸天子言：「善哉！诸天子！于佛不坏净成就，法、僧不坏净成就。」 |
Then the forty celestial beings rose from their seats, arranged their robes, bared their right shoulders, joined their palms, and said to the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "We have accomplished the unshakable faith in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha, and the noble precepts, and therefore we have been reborn in the heavens." One celestial being said, "I have accomplished the unshakable faith in the Buddha." Another said, "I have accomplished the unshakable faith in the Dharma." Another said, "I have accomplished the unshakable faith in the Saṅgha." Another said, "I have accomplished the noble precepts, and when my body perishes and my life ends, I will be reborn in the heavens. | 时，四十天子从座起，整衣服，偏袒右肩，合掌白尊者大目揵连：「我得于佛不坏净，于法、僧不坏净，圣戒成就，故生天上。」有一天言：「得于佛不坏净。」有言：「得法不坏净。」有言：「得僧不坏净。」有言：「圣戒成就，身坏命终，得生天上。」 |
Then the forty celestial beings, in the presence of the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, each declared their attainment of the fruit of stream-entry, and then disappeared. | 时，四十天子于尊者大目犍连前，各自记说得须陀洹果，即没不现。如四十天子。如是四百、八百、十千天子亦如是说。 |
