SA 508（五〇八） 屠牛儿
Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
Thus have I heard: | 一时，佛住王舍城迦兰陀竹园。时，尊者大目犍连与尊者勒叉那比丘共在耆阇崛山中。 |
The Venerable Revata went to the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana in the morning and said to him, "Let us go down from Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa and enter Rājagṛha to beg for alms." The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana silently agreed. They then went down from Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa and entered Rājagṛha to beg for alms. When they reached a certain place, the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana had a thought and smiled happily. | 尊者勒叉那晨朝诣尊者大目犍连所，语尊者大目犍连：「共出耆阇崛山，入王舍城乞食。」时，尊者大目犍连默然而许，即共出耆阇崛山，入王舍城乞食。行至一处，尊者大目犍连心有所念，欣然微笑。 |
Seeing the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana smile, the Venerable Revata asked him, "When the Buddha or the Buddha's disciples smile, it is not without a cause. What is the cause for your smile today?" | 尊者勒叉那见微笑已，即问尊者大目犍连言：「若佛及佛弟子欣然微笑，非无因缘，尊者今日何因何缘而发微笑？」 |
The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said, "Your question is not timely. Let us first enter Rājagṛha to beg for alms. Then, in the presence of the World-Honored One, you may ask about this matter. That is a timely question, and I will explain it to you." | 尊者大目犍连言：「所问非时，且入王舍城乞食，还于世尊前，当问是事，是应时问，当为汝说。」 |
Then the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana and the Venerable Revata entered Rājagṛha to beg for alms. After returning, washing their feet, and putting away their robes and bowls, they went to where the Buddha was. They bowed their heads at the Buddha's feet and sat to one side. The Venerable Revata asked the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "This morning, when we went out together from Vulture Peak Mountain to beg for alms, you smiled happily at one place. I asked you the reason for your smile, but you said my question was not timely. Now I ask you again, what was the reason for your happy smile?" | 时，尊者大目揵连与尊者勒叉那入王舍城乞食而还，洗足，举衣钵，俱诣佛所，稽首佛足，退坐一面。尊者勒叉那问尊者大目揵连：「我今晨朝与汝共出耆阇崛山乞食，汝于一处欣然微笑，我即问汝微笑因缘，汝答我言所问非时，今复问汝何因何缘欣然微笑？」 |
The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the Venerable Revata, "On the road, I saw a being whose body was like a pavilion, crying and wailing, with great sorrow and pain, flying through the air. Seeing this, I thought, 'Such a being has such a body and experiences such great sorrow and pain.' That is why I smiled." | 尊者大目犍连语尊者勒叉那：「我路中见一众生，身如楼阁，啼哭号呼，忧悲苦痛，乘虚而行。我见是已，作是思惟：『如是众生受如此身，而有如是忧悲大苦。』故发微笑。」 |
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "Excellent! Excellent! Among my śrāvakas, those who abide in the true eye, true wisdom, true meaning, and true Dharma, who have definitive understanding and insight, see these beings. I also see these beings, but I do not speak of it, fearing that people will not believe. Why is that? Those who do not believe what the Tathāgata says are foolish people who will suffer for a long time." | 尔时，世尊告诸比丘：「善哉！善哉！我声闻中，住实眼、实智、实义、实法，决定通达，见是众生，我亦见此众生，而不说者，恐人不信。所以者何？如来所说，有不信者，是愚痴人长夜受苦。」 |
The Buddha told the bhikṣus, "In the past, that being with the large body was a butcher of cattle in this city of Rājagṛha. Due to the karma of butchering cattle, he fell into hell for hundreds of thousands of years. After leaving hell, due to the remaining karma of butchering cattle, he obtained such a body and constantly experienced such sorrow, grief, and suffering. Thus, bhikṣus! As seen by the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, it is no different. You should uphold it." | 佛告诸比丘：「过去世时，彼大身众生在此王舍城，为屠牛儿，以屠牛因缘故，于百千岁堕地狱中，从地狱出，有屠牛余罪，得如是身，常受如是忧悲恼苦。如是，诸比丘！如尊者大目犍连所见不异，汝等受持。」 |
Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha finished. The bhikṣus, having heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced and upheld it. | 佛说此经已，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
