Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. At that time, the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana and the Venerable Revata were on Vulture Peak.

The Venerable Revata went to where the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was in the morning and said to the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "Let us go down from Vulture Peak and enter Rājagṛha to beg for alms." The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana silently agreed and went down from Vulture Peak with him to enter Rājagṛha to beg for alms.

When they reached a certain place, the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana had a thought and smiled happily. The Venerable Revata saw the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana smiling and asked, "Venerable One! If the Buddha or the Buddha's disciples smile, it is not without a reason. What is the reason for your smile today?"

The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said, "Your question is not timely. Let us beg for alms first. When we return to the World-Honored One, we should ask about this matter. That is a timely question."

The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana and the Venerable Revata entered the city together to beg for alms. After eating, they returned, washed their feet, put away their robes and bowls, and went to where the Buddha was. They bowed at the Buddha's feet and sat to one side. The Venerable Revata asked the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "This morning, when we entered Rājagṛha together to beg for alms, you smiled happily at a certain place. I asked you why you smiled, and you replied that the question was not timely. Now I ask you, what was the reason for your happy smile?"

The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the Venerable Revata, "On the road, I saw a being whose muscles and bones were connected, its entire body impure and foul-smelling. Crows, vultures, eagles, jackals, and starving dogs followed and tore at it, or probed its internal organs through its ribs to eat. It was in extreme pain, crying and wailing. Seeing this, I thought, 'Such beings have obtained such a body and experience such harmful suffering.'"

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "Good! Bhikṣus! Among my śrāvakas, I abide in the true eye, true wisdom, true meaning, and true Dharma, and have attained definitive understanding. I also see such beings, but I do not speak of it, fearing disbelief. Why is that? Those who do not believe the Tathāgata's words are foolish people who will experience immeasurable harm for a long time. Bhikṣus! Those beings, in a past life, were disciples of a cow butcher in this Rājagṛha. Due to the karma of butchering cows, they have already fallen into hell for hundreds of thousands of years and experienced immeasurable suffering. Due to the remaining karma of their evil deeds as cow butchers, they now obtain such a body and continue to experience such harmful suffering. Bhikṣus! What Mahāmaudgalyāyana saw is true and not different. You should uphold it."

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha said to the bhikṣus, "Good! Bhikṣus! Among my śrāvakas, I abide in the true eye, true wisdom, true meaning, and true Dharma, and have attained definitive understanding. I also see such beings, but I do not speak of it, fearing disbelief. Why is that? Those who do not believe
