Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha, while the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana and the Venerable Revata were on Vulture Peak. |
In the morning, the Venerable Revata went to where the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was and said to him, "Let us go down from Vulture Peak and enter Rājagṛha to beg for alms." The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana silently agreed and went down from Vulture Peak with him to enter Rājagṛha to beg for alms. |
As they were walking along, the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana had a thought and smiled happily. The Venerable Revata saw the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana smiling and asked him, "Venerable One! If the Buddha or the Buddha's disciples smile, it is not without a reason. What is the reason for your smile today?" |
The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said, "Your question is not timely. Let us beg for alms first. When we return, we will ask the World-Honored One about this matter. That is a timely question." |
The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana and the Venerable Revata entered the city together to beg for alms. After returning, they washed their feet, put away their robes and bowls, and went to where the Buddha was. They bowed at the Buddha's feet and sat to one side. The Venerable Revata asked the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "This morning, when we entered Rājagṛha together to beg for alms, you smiled happily at one place. I asked you the reason for your smile, but you replied that the question was not timely. Now I ask you, what was the reason for your happy smile?" |
The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to Revata, "On the road, I saw a large-bodied being with no skin on its body, just a mass of pure flesh, flying through the air. Crows, kites, vultures, jackals, and starving dogs followed and tore at it, or probed its internal organs through its ribs to eat them. The pain was excruciating, and it cried out in agony. I thought, 'Such a being has attained such a body and is now experiencing such harmful suffering.'" |
The Buddha told the monks, "Good! Among my disciples, those who abide in the true eye, true wisdom, true meaning, and true Dharma, who are determined and have penetrating insight, see these beings. I also see these beings, but I do not speak of it, fearing that they may not believe. Why is that? Those who do not believe what the Tathāgata says are foolish people who will suffer harm for a long time. Monks! These beings, in a past life, were butchers of sheep in this Rājagṛha. Because of that karma, they have fallen into hell for hundreds of thousands of years, experiencing immeasurable suffering. Now they have attained this body, and because of the remaining karma, they continue to experience this suffering. Monks! What Mahāmaudgalyāyana saw is true, without any difference. You should uphold it." |
Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha finished what he had to say. The monks, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and received them with respect. | |
