Thus have I heard: |
Once, the Buddha was staying in the Deer Park at the Sage's Abode in the country of Varanasi. At that time, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana and Venerable Revata entered the city of Varanasi together in the morning to beg for alms. On the way, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana contemplated and looked back, smiling happily. |
At that time, Venerable Revata said to Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "When the World-Honored One and the World-Honored One's disciples smile happily, there must be a reason. What is the reason for your happy smile today?" |
Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to Venerable Revata, "This is not the time to ask. Let us beg for alms and return to the World-Honored One. We shall ask about this matter then." |
Then they entered the city together to beg for alms. After returning, they washed their feet, put away their robes and bowls, and went to the World-Honored One. They bowed their heads at his feet, withdrew, and sat to one side. At that time, Venerable Revata asked Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "What was the reason for your happy smile on the road this morning?" |
Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to Venerable Revata, "On the road, I saw a large-bodied being whose entire body was rotting and stinking. It was flying through the air, pursued by crows, kites, vultures, jackals, and starving dogs, who tore at it and ate it. It was crying and wailing. I thought, 'Sentient beings obtain such a body and experience such suffering. How painful it is!'" |
The Buddha told the monks, "I also saw this being, but I did not speak of it, fearing disbelief. Why? Those who do not believe the Tathāgata's words are foolish people who will suffer for a long time. This being, in a past life, was a woman in this city of Vārāṇasī who made a living by selling her body. At that time, a monk had renounced the householder life under Kāśyapa Buddha. That woman, with impure intentions, invited that monk. The monk, with a sincere mind, accepted the invitation, not understanding her intentions. The woman became angry and sprinkled impure water on the monk's body. Because of this offense, he has already experienced immeasurable suffering in hell. The remaining karma from hell has caused him to obtain this body and continue to experience this suffering. Monks, what Mahāmaudgalyāyana saw is true and not different. You should uphold it." |
Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha finished. The monks, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and upheld them. |
