Thus have I heard: |
Thus have I heard: | |
At that time, Venerable Aniruddha, alone in a quiet place, was absorbed in meditation and contemplation, thinking: "There is one vehicle that purifies beings, frees them from sorrow, lamentation, pain, and distress, and leads them to the truth. It is the four foundations of mindfulness. What are the four? Mindfulness of the body in relation to the body, mindfulness of feelings, mind, and dharmas in relation to dharmas. If one is far from the four foundations of mindfulness, one is far from the noble teachings. If one is far from the noble teachings, one is far from the noble path. If one is far from the noble path, one is far from the Dharma of immortality. If one is far from the Dharma of immortality, one cannot escape birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and distress. If one has faith and joy in the four foundations of mindfulness, one has faith and joy in the noble teachings. If one has faith and joy in the noble teachings, one has faith and joy in the noble path. If one has faith and joy in the noble path, one has faith and joy in the Dharma of immortality. If one has faith and joy in the Dharma of immortality, one can escape birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and distress." |
At that time, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, knowing Venerable Aniruddha's thoughts, disappeared from the Fearsome Thicket of Birds and Beasts on the mountain of Śītavana in the village of Vṛji, and appeared before Venerable Aniruddha at the Pine Grove Monastery in Śrāvastī, as quickly as a strong man might bend and stretch his arm. He said to Aniruddha: "You were alone in a quiet place, absorbed in meditation and contemplation, thinking: 'There is one vehicle that purifies beings, frees them from sorrow, lamentation, pain, and distress, and leads them to the truth. It is the four foundations of mindfulness. What are the four? Mindfulness of the body in relation to the body, mindfulness of feelings, mind, and dharmas in relation to dharmas. If one is not joyful in the four foundations of mindfulness, one is not joyful in the noble teachings. If one is not joyful in the noble teachings, one is not joyful in the noble path. If one is not joyful in the noble path, one is not joyful in the Dharma of immortality. If one is not joyful in the Dharma of immortality, one cannot escape birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and distress. If one has faith and joy in the four foundations of mindfulness, one has faith and joy in the noble teachings. If one has faith and joy in the noble teachings, one has faith and joy in the noble path. If one has faith and joy in the noble path, one attains the Dharma of immortality. If one attains the Dharma of immortality, one can escape birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and distress.' Is that so?" |
Venerable Aniruddha said to Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: "Yes, it is so, Venerable One!" | |
Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to Venerable Aniruddha: "What is meant by joy in the four foundations of mindfulness?" | |
Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said: "If a bhikṣu contemplates the body with mindfulness of the body, his mind is focused on the body, with right mindfulness abiding, disciplined, restrained, and tranquil, progressing in one-pointedness of mind. In the same way, with mindfulness of feelings, mind, and dharmas, right mindfulness abides, disciplined, restrained, and tranquil, progressing in one-pointedness of mind. Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, this is called a bhikṣu's joy in the four foundations of mindfulness." |
At that time, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana entered the samādhi of the true nature of reality as it is, and returned from the pine grove monastery in Śrāvastī to the place of fear and dense forest of animals in the mountain of Śītavana in the village of Vṛji. |
