Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana asked the Venerable Anuruddha, "What is meant by cultivating and practicing the four foundations of mindfulness?" |
The Venerable Anuruddha said to the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, "If a monk generates a thought of disgust towards the internal body, a thought of non-disgust towards the internal body, and a thought of neither disgust nor non-disgust towards the internal body, he abides with right mindfulness and right attentiveness. As with the internal body, so with the external body, the internal and external body, internal feelings, external feelings, internal and external feelings, internal mind, external mind, internal and external mind, internal phenomena, external phenomena, internal and external phenomena, he generates a thought of disgust, a thought of non-disgust, and a thought of neither disgust nor non-disgust, abiding with right mindfulness and right attentiveness. Thus, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, this is called cultivating and practicing the four foundations of mindfulness." |
At that time, the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana immediately entered concentration and, by the power of concentration and supernormal abilities, in the time it takes a strong man to bend and stretch his arm, returned from the Jeta Grove in Śrāvastī to the place where the birds and beasts dwelt in the terrifying and dense forest on the mountain of the demon Rāhu in the village of Vṛji. |
