Thus have I heard:

Thus have I heard:

Then the householder Hārī went to Venerable Mahākātyāyana, bowed his head at his feet, sat to one side, and said to Venerable Mahākātyāyana: "As the World-Honored One said in the cave of the Stone Chamber of Indra in the mountain range of the boundary, 'Kauśika! If a śramaṇa or brāhmaṇa has the highest extinction of desire and liberation, the mind is rightly and well liberated, reaching the ultimate limit, ultimate purity, ultimate practice of the holy life, and ultimate purity.' How does one reach the ultimate limit, ultimate purity, ultimate practice of the holy life, and ultimate purity in this Dharma and Vinaya?"

Venerable Mahākātyāyana said to the householder, "It is when the eye, eye consciousness, and the characteristics of forms cognized by eye consciousness arise together with joy. If they are exhausted, desireless, extinguished, ceased, and gone, then in this Dharma and Vinaya one reaches the ultimate limit, ultimate purity, ultimate practice of the holy life, and ultimate purity. The ear, nose, tongue, body, mind, mental consciousness, and the characteristics of dharmas cognized by mental consciousness arise together with joy. If they are exhausted, extinguished, ceased, and gone, then the bhikṣu in this Dharma and Vinaya reaches ultimate purity, ultimate practice of the holy life, and ultimate purity."

Then the householder Hārī, having heard what was said by Venerable Mahākātyāyana, delighted and rejoiced in it, bowed his head at his feet, and departed.
