Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
At one time, the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. At that time, Venerable Mahākātyāyana was in the village of Śākya Hārī. | 一时，佛住舍卫国祇树给孤独园。尔时，尊者摩诃迦旃延在释氏诃梨聚落。 |
The village headman and elder went to Venerable Mahākātyāyana, bowed at his feet, sat to one side, and asked Venerable Mahākātyāyana, "As the World-Honored One said to Śakra, Lord of the Devas, in a mountain cave in the realm of the gods, 'Kauśika! If a śramaṇa or brāhmaṇa has completely extinguished the highest form of desire and is liberated, with a well-liberated mind, having reached the ultimate limit, being ultimately free from defilements, having ultimately practiced the holy life, and being ultimately pure,' how is it that in this Dharma and Vinaya one reaches the ultimate limit, is ultimately free from defilements, ultimately practices the holy life, and is ultimately pure? " | 聚落主长者诣尊者摩诃迦旃延所，稽首礼足，退坐一面，问尊者摩诃迦旃延：「如世尊界隔山石窟中为天帝释说言：『憍尸迦！若沙门、婆罗门无上爱尽解脱，心善解脱，边际究竟，究竟无垢，究竟梵行，毕竟清净。』云何于此法、律究竟边际，究竟无垢，究竟梵行，毕竟清净？」 |
Venerable Kātyāyana said to the elder, "If a bhikṣu is attached to the eye-element, the mental-object-element, and the afflictions of the mental-object-realm, if they are exhausted, desireless, ceased, and extinguished, then in this Dharma and Vinaya they reach the ultimate limit, are ultimately free from defilements, ultimately practice the holy life, and are ultimately pure. If they are attached to the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind-elements, the mental-object-element, and the afflictions of the mental-object-realm, if they are exhausted, separated, extinguished, ceased, and extinguished, then in this Dharma and Vinaya they reach the ultimate limit, are ultimately free from defilements, ultimately practice the holy life, and are ultimately pure." | 尊者迦旃延语长者言：「若比丘眼界取，心法境界系著使，彼若尽、无欲、息、没，于此法、律究竟边际，究竟无垢，究竟梵行，究竟清净。耳、鼻、舌、身、意、意界取，心法境界系著使，若尽、离、灭、息、没，于此法、律究竟边际，究竟无垢，究竟梵行，毕竟清净。」 |
At that time, the village headman and elder Hārī heard what was said by Venerable Mahākātyāyana, rejoiced, bowed, and left. | 时，诃梨聚落主长者闻尊者摩诃迦旃延所说，欢喜随喜，作礼而去。 |
