Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying in the mango grove of Ambapālī's grove near Rājagṛha, together with a large assembly of elder bhikṣus.

At that time, the elder Citta went to the elder bhikṣus, bowed his head at their feet, and sat to one side.

At that time, the elder bhikṣus taught the Dharma to the elder Citta in various ways, showing, teaching, illuminating, and delighting him. Having taught the Dharma in various ways, showing, teaching, illuminating, and delighting him, they remained silent. Then the elder Citta bowed his head at the feet of the elder bhikṣus and went to the dwelling of the bhikṣu Nāgadatta. He bowed his head at the feet of the bhikṣu Nāgadatta and sat to one side.

At that time, the bhikṣu Nāgadatta asked the elder Citta as he had said:

The green branches are covered with white, a cart with one spoke
turns, coming to observe the untied, cutting off the stream, no longer bound.

"Elder, what is the meaning of this verse?"

The elder Jīvaka said, "Venerable Nāgârjuna, did the World-Honored One speak this verse?"

He replied, "Yes, it is so."

The elder Jīvaka said to Venerable Nāgârjuna, "Venerable One, please be silent for a moment while I contemplate this meaning."

After a moment of silent contemplation, he said to Venerable Nāgârjuna, "Blue refers to precepts, white covering refers to liberation, one spoke refers to mindfulness of the body, turning refers to turning out, the chariot refers to calming and contemplation, and leaving the bonds refers to the three kinds of bonds, namely greed, anger, and delusion. Those arhats have exhausted all taints, extinguished them, known them, and cut off their roots, like cutting off the top of a palm tree, never to grow again. In the future they will be extinguished and not arise.

Observation refers to seeing, coming refers to a person, and cutting off the stream refers to the stream of craving in birth and death. Those arhat bhikṣus have exhausted all taints, known them, and cut off their roots, like cutting off the top of a palm tree, never to grow again. In the future they will be extinguished and not arise.

Unbound refers to the three bonds: the bond of desire, the bond of anger, and the bond of delusion. Those arhat bhikṣus have exhausted all taints, cut them off, and known them, cut off their roots, like cutting off the top of a palm tree, never to grow again. In the future they will be extinguished and not arise. Therefore, Venerable Nāgârjuna! The World-Honored One spoke this verse:

The branches are green, covered with white, a cart with one spoke turns
free from bonds, observing the coming, cutting off the stream, not bound again.

I have already explained the verse spoken by the World-Honored One.

Venerable Nāgadatta asked the elder Jīvaka, "Did you hear this meaning before?"

He replied, "I did not hear it."

Venerable Nāgadatta said, "Elder, you have gained great benefits. You have entered the wisdom eye of the noble ones in this profound Buddha Dharma."

At that time, the elder Jīvaka heard what Venerable Nāgadatta said, and he rejoiced and paid homage before departing.
