Thus have I heard: |
At one time, the Buddha was staying in the mango grove of Ambapālī's grove near Rājagṛha, together with a large assembly of elder bhikṣus. | |
At that time, the elder Citta went to the elder bhikṣus, bowed his head at their feet, and sat to one side. He said to the elder bhikṣus, "The various views in the world, some say there is a self, some say there are sentient beings, some say there is life, some say there is good and bad in the world. Venerable ones, what is the basis, accumulation, arising, and turning of these different views?" |
At that time, the elder bhikṣus remained silent and did not answer. They remained silent in this way three times when asked. | |
At that time, there was a junior bhikṣu named Lishi Datou who said to the elder bhikṣus, "I wish to answer the questions of the elder." | |
The elder bhikṣus said, "Those who can answer well should answer." | |
At that time, the elder asked Lishi Datou, "Venerable one! What is the basis, accumulation, birth, and turning of what is seen in the world?" |
Venerable Lishi Datou replied, "Elder! What is seen in the world, whether it is said to be the self, sentient beings, life, or the auspicious and inauspicious of the world, all these views are based on the view of the body, accumulated from the view of the body, born from the view of the body, and turn from the view of the body." |
He further asked, "Venerable one! What is the view of the body?" | |
He replied, "Elder! Ignorant and unlearned ordinary people see form as the self, form as different from the self, the self in form, or form in the self. They see feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness as the self, consciousness as different from the self, the self in consciousness, or consciousness in the self. Elder! This is called the view of the body." |
He further asked, "Venerable one! How can one be free from this view of the body?" | |
He replied, "Elder! It means that the learned noble disciples do not see form as the self, do not see form as different from the self, do not see the self in form or form in the self. They do not see feeling, perception, volition, or consciousness as the self, do not see consciousness as different from the self, do not see the self in consciousness or consciousness in the self. This is called being free from the view of the body." |
He further asked, "Venerable one! What is the name of your father? Where were you born?" | |
He replied, "Elder! I was born into a wealthy merchant's family in the hinterlands." | |
The elder Jīvaka said to Venerable Rāhula, "Our two fathers were originally good friends." | |
Rāhula replied, "So it is, elder!" | |
The elder Jīvaka said to Rāhula, "Venerable one, if you can stay in this mango grove, I will provide you with robes, food and drink, and medicine for illness for as long as I live." Rāhula silently accepted the invitation. |
At that time, Venerable Rāhula accepted the invitation of the elder Jīvaka and was hindered by the offerings. He did not go to see the World-Honored One for a long time. |
At that time, the elder bhikkhus taught the elder Jīvaka in various ways, showing, teaching, illuminating, and delighting him. Having shown, taught, illuminated, and delighted him, the elder Jīvaka was delighted and delighted in return, paid homage, and departed. |
