Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying in the mango grove, together with a large assembly of senior monks.

At that time, many senior monks gathered in the dining hall and discussed this: "Venerable ones, what do you think? Is the eye bound to form, or is form bound to the eye? Is the ear bound to sound, the nose bound to smell, the tongue bound to taste, the body bound to touch, and the mind bound to dharmas, or are dharmas bound to the mind?"

At that time, the elder Citta was on his way to attend to some business. He passed by the monastery and saw the senior monks gathered in the dining hall. He then went forward, bowed at the feet of the senior monks, and asked, "Venerable ones, why are you gathered in the dining hall? What Dharma are you discussing?"

The senior monks replied, "Elder, today we gathered in the dining hall to discuss this: 'Is the eye bound to form, or is form bound to the eye? Is the ear bound to sound, the nose bound to smell, the tongue bound to taste, the body bound to touch, and the mind bound to dharmas, or are dharmas bound to the mind?'"

The elder asked, "Venerable ones, how do you explain this meaning?"

The senior monks said, "What do you think, elder?"

The elder replied to the senior monks, "In my opinion, it is not that the eye is bound to form, nor is form bound to the eye, up to it is not that the mind is bound to dharmas, nor are dharmas bound to the mind. However, in the middle, there is one who is attached to desire and greed, and is bound by that. It is like two oxen, one black and one white, yoked together. If someone asks, 'Is the black ox bound to the white ox, or is the white ox bound to the black ox?' is it an equal question?"

He replied, "Elder, it is not an equal question. Why? It is not that the black ox is bound to the white ox, nor is the white ox bound to the black ox. However, the yoke and harness are what bind them."

"It is like this, Venerable One! It is not that the eye is bound to form, nor is form bound to the eye, up to it is not that the mind is bound to dharmas, nor are dharmas bound to the mind. However, in the middle, desire and greed are what bind them."

At that time, the elder Jāṇussoṇi heard the teachings of the elders and joyfully followed and rejoiced, paid homage, and departed.
