SA 619（六一九） 私迦陀

Thus have I heard: | 如是我闻： |
At one time, the Buddha was traveling among the people of Kosala and stayed at the Śiṃśapā Forest north of the village of Siṅgālaka. | 一时，佛在拘萨罗人间游行，于私伽陀聚落北身恕林中。 |
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "In the past, there was a master of acrobatic performances who held a pole on his shoulder and said to his disciples, 'You should protect me from above and below the pole, and I will also protect you. By protecting each other, we can travel and play, and obtain much wealth.' The disciples then said to the master, 'It is not as you say. We should each protect ourselves, travel and play, and obtain much wealth. Then our bodies will be free from suffering and we can descend.' The master replied, 'As you say, we should each protect ourselves. But the meaning of this is also as I have said. When we protect ourselves, we are also protecting others. When others protect themselves, they are also protecting us. To cultivate and practice the protection of the mind is to realize it. This is called protecting oneself and others. How does protecting others protect oneself? It means not frightening others, not going against others, not harming others, and having compassion for them. This is called protecting others and oneself.' Therefore, bhikṣus, you should train like this. Protecting oneself means cultivating the four foundations of mindfulness. Protecting others also means cultivating the four foundations of mindfulness." | 尔时，世尊告诸比丘：「过去世时有缘幢伎师，肩上竖幢，语弟子言：『汝等于幢上下向护我，我亦护汝，迭相护持，游行嬉戏，多得财利。』时，伎弟子语伎师言：『不如所言，但当各各自爱护，游行嬉戏，多得财利，身得无为安隐而下。』伎师答言：『如汝所言，各自爱护，然其此义亦如我说，己自护时即是护他，他自护时亦是护己；心自亲近，修习随护作证，是名自护护他。云何护他自护，不恐怖他、不违他、不害他，慈心哀彼，是名护他自护。』是故，比丘！当如是学。自护者修四念处，护他者亦修四念处。」 |
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha had said and joyfully practiced it. | 佛说此经已，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
