Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "I will now explain the existence of the body, the origin of the existence of the body, the cessation of the existence of the body, and the path leading to the cessation of the existence of the body. Listen carefully and consider it well, I will explain it to you. What is the existence of the body? It refers to the five aggregates of clinging. What are the five? They are the form aggregate of clinging, the feeling aggregate of clinging, the perception aggregate of clinging, the volitional formations aggregate of clinging, and the consciousness aggregate of clinging. This is called the existence of the body. What is the origin of the existence of the body? It is future existence, together with craving and delight, clinging to various things. This is called the origin of the existence of the body. What is the cessation of the existence of the body? It is the remainderless fading away and cessation of future existence, together with craving and delight, clinging to various things. This is called the cessation of the existence of the body. |
What is the path leading to the cessation of the existence of the body? It is the Noble Eightfold Path, namely right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. This is called the path leading to the cessation of the existence of the body. This is called the explanation of the existence of the body, the origin of the existence of the body, the cessation of the existence of the body, and the path leading to the cessation of the existence of the body. |
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus who heard what the Buddha had said rejoiced and received it respectfully. | |
The rest is explained in the same way. The difference is: "One should know the existence of the body, one should know the cessation of the origin of the existence of the body, one should know the realization of the cessation of the existence of the body, and one should know the cultivation of the path leading to the cessation of the existence of the body." |
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus who heard what the Buddha had said rejoiced and received it respectfully. | |
As will be explained, the existence and the knowledge of it are also explained in the same way. Moreover, the difference is: "Bhikṣus, knowing the existence of the body, cutting off the origin of the existence of the body, realizing the cessation of the existence of the body, cultivating the path leading to the cessation of the existence of the body, this is called a bhikṣu cutting off the fetters of desire and love, cultivating the uninterrupted path, and ultimately reaching the end of suffering." |
Moreover, the difference is: "This is called a bhikṣu reaching the ultimate limit, ultimately free from defilements, ultimately practicing the pure brahmacarya, and being a pure and excellent person." |
Moreover, the difference is: "This is called a bhikṣu who is an arhat, having exhausted all taints, having done what was to be done, having laid down the heavy burden, having attained his own benefit, having exhausted all bonds, and having attained liberation of mind through right knowledge." |
Moreover, the difference is: "This is called a bhikṣu who has broken through the barriers, crossed the moats, transcended the boundaries, escaped the guards, and raised the banner of the holy Dharma." |
Moreover, the difference is: "What is meant by 'breaking through the barriers'? It means severing the five lower fetters. What is meant by 'crossing the moats'? It means crossing the deep moat of ignorance. What is meant by 'transcending the boundaries'? It means ultimately ending beginningless birth and death. What is meant by 'escaping the guards'? It means the end of craving for existence. What is meant by 'raising the banner of the holy Dharma'? It means the end of conceit." |
Moreover, the difference is: "This is called a bhikṣu who has severed the five branches, accomplished the six branches, guarded the one, relied on the four kinds, abandoned the truths, separated from all seeking, purified the awakenings, ceased bodily activities, well liberated in mind, well liberated in wisdom, established the pure practice of the brahman, and is the unsurpassed person." |
