Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus: "There are five aggregates of grasping. What are the five? They are the form aggregate of grasping. If a bhikṣu is disgusted with form, free from desire, extinguished, unarisen, and liberated, that is called a Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One. Similarly, with regard to feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, being disgusted, free from desire, extinguished, unarisen, and liberated, that is called a Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One. If a bhikṣu is disgusted with form, free from desire, extinguished, that is called an arhat liberated by wisdom. Similarly, with regard to feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, being disgusted, free from desire, extinguished, that is called an arhat liberated by wisdom. Bhikṣus, what is the difference between a Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, and an arhat liberated by wisdom?" |
The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "The Tathāgata is the root of the Dharma, the eye of the Dharma, and the support of the Dharma. May the World-Honored One please explain this meaning in detail for the bhikṣus. Having heard it, the bhikṣus will accept and uphold it." |
The Buddha told the bhikṣus: "Listen carefully and consider it well, I will explain it for you. The Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, having never heard the Dharma before, was able to realize the Dharma by himself, and attained unsurpassed enlightenment. In the future, he will awaken the śrāvakas and teach them the Dharma, namely the four foundations of mindfulness, four right efforts, four bases of supernormal power, five faculties, five powers, seven factors of awakening, and eightfold path. Bhikṣus, this is called the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, who has attained what was not attained before, benefited what was not benefited before, knows the path, discerns the path, teaches the path, and practices the path. He is also able to accomplish the teaching and instruction of the śrāvakas. Teaching in this way is in accordance with the joy and delight in the good Dharma. This is called the difference between the Tathāgata and the arhat." |
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus who heard what the Buddha had said rejoiced and upheld it. |
