Thus have I heard:

Thus have I heard:

At that time, there was a Brāhman named Jīvaka who was riding in a white horse carriage, accompanied by many young men. The white horse, carriage, reins, and whip were all white. He wore a white hat, white umbrella, held a white whisk, and was dressed in white clothes and white necklaces. White incense was applied to his body, and his attendants were all dressed in white. He left the city of Śrāvastī and was going to the forest to teach and recite. The people who saw him all said, "What a good ride! What a good ride! It is said that the Brāhman is riding.

At that time, Venerable Ānanda saw that the Brāhman's retinue and all the equipment were all white. Having seen this, he entered the city to beg for food. Returning to the monastery, he put away his robe and bowl, washed his feet, and went to where the Buddha was. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, sat to one side, and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! This morning, I put on my robe, took my bowl, and entered the city of Śrāvastī to beg for food. I saw the Brāhman Jīvaka riding in a white horse carriage, with his retinue and all the equipment being all white. The people were shouting, 'What a good ride! What a good ride! It is said that the Brāhman is riding.' World-Honored One! In the true Dharma and Vinaya, is this the ride of the world or the ride of the Brāhman?"

The Buddha told Ānanda, "This is the ride of the world, not the ride of the Brāhman in my Dharma and Vinaya. Ānanda! In my true Dharma and Vinaya, the ride is the ride of the gods, the ride of the Brāhman, the great vehicle, which can subdue the army of afflictions. Listen carefully and think well, I will explain it to you. Ānanda! What is the ride of the true Dharma and Vinaya, the ride of the gods, the ride of the Brāhman, the great vehicle, which can subdue the army of afflictions? It refers to the eightfold right path - right view up to right concentration. Ānanda! This is called the ride of the true Dharma and Vinaya, the ride of the gods, the ride of the Brāhman, the great vehicle, which can subdue the army of afflictions."

At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:

Faith and precepts are the yoke of the Dharma, with shame and
conscience as the long reins, with right mindfulness and good protection as
the good charioteer, abandoning samadhi as the axle, with wisdom and diligence
as the wheels, with non-attachment and patience as the armor, peacefully practicing
according to the Dharma, advancing straight without retreating, permanently going to the
place of no worries. The wise one rides the chariot, subduing the
enemy of ignorance.
