Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "There are five dharmas that greatly benefit the cultivation of mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation. What are the five? Abiding in pure precepts, the Prātimokṣa code of conduct, and fully endowed with dignified deportment and conduct, being able to generate fear even for minor offenses, and upholding the precepts of training - this is called the first greatly beneficial cultivation of mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation. Furthermore, bhikṣus! Having few desires, few affairs, and few tasks - this is called the second dharma greatly benefiting the cultivation of mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation. Furthermore, bhikṣus! Knowing the proper amount of food, neither too much nor too little, not giving rise to the thought of seeking food, and diligently contemplating - this is called the third dharma greatly benefiting the cultivation of mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation. Furthermore, bhikṣus! Not being attached to sleep in the early and late parts of the night, and diligently contemplating - this is called the fourth dharma greatly benefiting the cultivation of mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation. Furthermore, bhikṣus! Being in an empty and secluded forest, away from all busyness and noise - this is called the fifth dharma greatly benefiting the cultivation of mindfulness of inhalation and exhalation." |
After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha had said and joyfully practiced it. |
