Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World-Honored One, in the morning, put on his robe, took his alms bowl, and entered the city of Śrāvastī to beg for food. After eating, he returned to the monastery, put away his robe and bowl, washed his feet, took his sitting mat, and went to the Ānanda Grove. He sat under a tree for daytime meditation.

At that time, Venerable Kāśyapa also, in the morning, put on his robe, took his alms bowl, and entered the city of Śrāvastī to beg for food. After returning, he put away his robe and bowl, washed his feet, took his sitting mat, and went to the Ānanda Grove. He sat in meditation under a tree, not far from the Buddha, with his body upright and unmoving, with his mind and body upright and straight, with excellent and wonderful contemplation.

At that time, many bhikṣus, in the afternoon, arose from their meditation and went to where the Buddha was. They bowed their heads at the Buddha's feet and sat to one side.

The Buddha told the bhikṣus, "Do you see Venerable Kāśyapa, not far from me, sitting upright with his body and mind unmoving, abiding in excellent and wonderful abiding?"

The bhikṣus said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! We have often seen that Venerable One sitting upright with his body well-controlled, not leaning or moving, with a mind focused on the excellent and wonderful."

The Buddha told the bhikṣus, "If a bhikṣu cultivates samādhi, with body and mind abiding peacefully, not leaning or moving, abiding in excellent and wonderful abiding, then that bhikṣu, having attained this samādhi, will effortlessly and spontaneously attain it as he wishes."

The bhikṣus said to the Buddha, "What is the samādhi that, when a bhikṣu attains it, his body and mind do not move, abiding in excellent and wonderful abiding?"

The Buddha told the bhikṣus, "If a bhikṣu relies on a village, in the morning he puts on his robe, takes his alms bowl, enters the village to beg for food, returns to the monastery, puts away his robe and bowl, washes his feet, enters the forest, or sits in an empty room or in the open, contemplates and focuses his mind, and up to the cessation of breathing and the observation of good learning, this is called samādhi. If a bhikṣu sits upright and contemplates, with body and mind not moving, abiding in excellent and wonderful abiding."

After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha had said and joyfully practiced it.
