Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "It is like a donkey following a herd of cows, thinking, 'I am making the sound of a cow.' But its form is not like a cow, its color is not like a cow, and the sound it makes is not like a cow. It follows the large herd of cows, thinking it is a cow, and makes the sound of a cow. But it is actually far from being a cow. In the same way, there is a foolish man who violates the precepts and follows the great assembly, saying, 'I am a bhikṣu. I am a bhikṣu.' But he does not learn the superior training in morality, the superior training in concentration, and the superior training in wisdom. He follows the great assembly, saying to himself, 'I am a bhikṣu. I am a bhikṣu.' But he is actually far from being a bhikṣu."

At that time the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:

The hoofed animal without horns, with four feet and a voice, follows
the large herd of cows, always taking them as companions. Its form
is not like a cow, and it cannot make the sound of
a cow. In the same way, the foolish person does not follow
the mind's contemplation. In the teachings of the Well-Gone One, he has
no desire and diligent means. Lazy and arrogant, he does not attain
the unsurpassed path. Like a donkey in a herd of cows, he
is always far from the cows. Although he follows the great assembly
his inner practice is always at odds.

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha finished. The bhikṣus, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and received them with respect.
