Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "The wheel-turning king is endowed with the seven treasures and accomplishes the four kinds of supernatural powers among humans. He rules over the four continents. When his body perishes and his life ends, he is reborn in the heavens. Although the wheel-turning sage king is endowed with the seven treasures and accomplishes the supernatural powers among humans, he rules over the four continents, and when his body perishes and his life ends, he is reborn in the heavens, he still has not cut off the suffering of the evil destinies of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts. Why is that? Because the wheel-turning king does not attain the unshakable faith in the Buddha, the unshakable faith in the Dharma and Saṅgha, and does not accomplish the noble precepts. |
"The well-versed noble disciple wears cast-off rags, begs for food from house to house, and uses grass mats and bedding. That well-versed noble disciple is liberated from the suffering of the evil destinies of hell, animals, and hungry ghosts. Why is that? Because that well-versed noble disciple has unshakable faith in the Buddha, the Dharma and Saṅgha, and has accomplished the noble precepts. Therefore, bhikṣus, you should train thus: 'To have unshakable faith in the Buddha, the Dharma and Saṅgha, and to accomplish the noble precepts.'" |
Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha finished what he had to say. The bhikṣus, having heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced and received it respectfully. | |
