Parallel to: SN 55.5
Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | |
At that time the World-Honored One said to Venerable Śāriputra, "What is meant by 'flowing'? What is flowing?" | |
Śāriputra said to the Buddha, "The World-Honored One has said that 'flowing' refers to the eightfold noble path." |
He further asked Śāriputra, "What is meant by 'entering the stream'? What is entering the stream?" | |
Śāriputra said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! There are four kinds of entering the stream. What are the four? They are: associating with good men, listening to the true Dharma, proper contemplation within, and following the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma." |
He further asked Śāriputra, "How many dharmas does one who enters the stream accomplish?" | |
Śāriputra said to the Buddha, "There are four aspects that accomplish entering the stream. What are the four? They are: unshakable faith in the Buddha, unshakable faith in the Dharma, unshakable faith in the Saṃgha, and accomplishing the holy precepts." |
The Buddha told Śāriputra, "As you have said, the stream refers to the eightfold noble path. There are four aspects of entering the stream, namely: associating with good men, listening to the true Dharma, proper contemplation within, and following the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma. One who enters the stream accomplishes four dharmas, namely: unshakable faith in the Buddha, unshakable faith in the Dharma, unshakable faith in the Saṃgha, and accomplishing the holy precepts." |
Having spoken this sūtra, the Venerable Śāriputra, having heard the Buddha's words, rejoiced and upheld them. |
