Saṃyuktāgama

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "There are four right efforts. What are the four? First, the effort to eliminate; second, the effort to restrain; third, the effort to protect; fourth, the effort to cultivate. What is the effort to eliminate? It means that a bhikṣu has already eliminated evil and unwholesome dharmas, and generates desire, skillful means, diligence, and mental acceptance. This is called the effort to eliminate. What is the effort to restrain? It means that one does not give rise to evil and unwholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen, and generates desire, skillful means, diligence, and acceptance. This is called the effort to restrain. What is the effort to protect? It means that one gives rise to wholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen, and generates desire, skillful means, diligence, and acceptance. This is called the effort to protect. What is the effort to cultivate? It means that one increases and cultivates wholesome dharmas that have already arisen, and generates desire, skillful means, diligence, and acceptance. This is called the effort to cultivate."

After the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha had said and joyfully practiced it.
