SA 88（八八） 郁多罗

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, there was a young brahmin named Uttara who came to where the Buddha was. He exchanged greetings and pleasantries with the World-Honored One, then sat to one side and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! I always beg for alms according to the Dharma and use it to support my parents, bringing them happiness and freeing them from suffering. World-Honored One! Is this a great merit?"

The Buddha told Uttara, "It truly brings great merit. Why is that? If one begs for alms according to the Dharma and uses it to support one's parents, bringing them peace and happiness and freeing them from suffering, it truly brings great merit." At that time, the World-Honored One spoke a verse, saying:

Just as you respectfully serve and make offerings to your parents, your fame will spread
in this world, and when your life ends, you will be reborn in the heavens.

Having spoken this sūtra, the Buddha concluded. The young Uttara rejoiced, bowed, and departed.
