Parallel to: SN 18.1–10 (~)
Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. | |
At that time, Venerable Rāhula came to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, and sat to one side. He said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! How does one know and see, so that one does not recollect any characteristics of this body and mind, or of external objects, and exhausts all taints in between?" |
The Buddha told Rāhula, "There are six internal sense bases. What are the six? They are the sense base of the eye, the sense base of the ear, the sense base of the nose, the sense base of the tongue, the sense base of the body, and the sense base of the mind. By correctly contemplating these dharmas, one exhausts all taints. With the mind well liberated by correct wisdom, one is called an arhat who has exhausted all taints, done what was to be done, laid down the heavy burden, attained one's own benefit, exhausted all bonds, and attained liberation of the mind by correct wisdom." |
Having spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha said and joyfully practiced it. |
As with the six internal sense bases, the six external sense bases, and so forth up to the five aggregates, the same is said. |
