Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha.

At that time, many brahmins had gone forth and were staying by the side of the Sumāgadhā Pond. They gathered together in one place and discussed, "This is the true truth of the brahmins, this is the true truth of the brahmins."

At that time, the World-Honored One knew the thoughts of those many brahmins who had gone forth. He went to the side of the Sumāgadhā Pond.

At that time, the many brahmins who had gone forth saw the Buddha coming from afar. They immediately prepared a seat for the Buddha and invited him to sit down.

The Buddha then sat down and said to the brahmins who had gone forth, "Why have you all gathered here at the Sumāgadhā Pond?"

The brahmins who had gone forth said to the Buddha, "Gautama! We, the many brahmins who have gone forth, gathered here to discuss, 'This is the true truth of the brahmins. This is the true truth of the brahmins.'"

The Buddha said to the brahmins who had gone forth, "There are three kinds of brahmins' true truths that I have realized and attained perfect enlightenment, and I also explain them to others. You brahmins who have gone forth say, 'Not harming any sentient beings is the true truth of the brahmins, not false.' If you do not cling to the true truth in their words, and have a compassionate mind and appearance towards all worlds, this is called the first brahmins' true truth that I have realized and attained perfect enlightenment, and I explain it to others.

Furthermore, the brahmins say, 'All things that arise are things that cease. This is the true truth, not false.' Up to not clinging to the true truth in their words, observing the arising and ceasing of all worlds, this is called the second brahmins' true truth.

"Furthermore, the brahmins say, 'There is no self, no place, and no matter at all. There is no self, no place, and no matter at all. This is the true truth, not false.' As explained before, up to not clinging to the true truth in their words, the appearance of no-self in all worlds, this is called the third brahmins' true truth that I have realized and attained perfect enlightenment, and I explain it to others." At that time, the many brahmins who had gone forth remained silent.

At that time, the World-Honored One thought: "Now, I will illuminate those fools and destroy those evil ones. There is no one in this assembly who can contemplate and create causes and conditions to practice the holy life in the Dharma of the Śramaṇa Gautama." Knowing this, he rose from his seat and departed.
