Saṃyuktāgama
Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. | |
At that time Śakra, lord of the devas, of surpassing beauty, came to where the Buddha was in the latter part of the night, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, and stood to one side. The radiance of his divine body illuminated the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove. |
Then Śakra, lord of the devas, said to the Buddha, “World-Honored One! The World-Honored One once said in a mountain cave on the border of the realm: ‘If there are śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas who are liberated from the highest love and have liberated minds, they have reached the ultimate limit, the ultimate limit of purity, and the ultimate of the holy life.’ What is the ultimate limit, the ultimate limit of purity, and the ultimate of the holy life for a bhikṣu?” |
The Buddha told Śakra, lord of the devas, “Bhikṣus, all feelings, whether pleasant, painful, or neither pleasant nor painful, they know their origin, cessation, taste, suffering, and exit. Knowing them as they are, they observe those feelings as impermanent, observe their arising and cessation, observe detachment from them, observe their cessation and extinction, and observe letting them go. Observing them thus, they reach the ultimate limit, the ultimate limit of purity, and the ultimate of the holy life. Kauśika! This is called the ultimate limit, the ultimate limit of purity, and the ultimate of the holy life for bhikṣus in the true Dharma and Vinaya.” |
When Śakra, lord of the devas, heard the Buddha's words, he rejoiced and followed the teachings. He bowed and departed. | |
