Saṃyuktāgama
Thus have I heard: |
At one time the Buddha was staying at the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha. | |
At that time, the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana was staying on Vulture Peak. In the latter part of the night, he got up and walked back and forth, and saw a light that illuminated the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove. Having seen it, he thought: "Tonight, a powerful ghost or spirit has come to where the World-Honored One is, and that is why there is this light." |
Then the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana went to where the Buddha was in the morning, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, sat to one side, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! Last night, after the middle of the night, I went out of my room to walk back and forth, and saw a supreme light that illuminated the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove. Having seen it, I thought: 'What powerful ghost or spirit has come to where the World-Honored One is, and that is why there is this light?'" |
The Buddha told the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: "Last night, after the middle of the night, Śakra, Lord of the Devas, came to where I was, bowed his head at my feet, and sat to one side." |
As extensively explained in the sūtras above, he rejoiced and followed suit, paid homage, and departed. | |
