The chapter on birth and death explains that the souls of all people are impermanent, and the spirit exists, following actions and transmigrating through rebirth. | |
Life is like a fruit waiting to ripen, always fearing it will fall. All that is born has suffering, who can attain immortality?
From the initial enjoyment of love, one enters the foam and shadow of desire. The life span is like lightning, flowing day and night, difficult to stop.
This body is a dead object, the spirit is a formless dharma. Even if one dies and is reborn, one's merits and demerits do not perish.
The beginning and end are not just one lifetime, from delusion and love lasting long From here one experiences suffering and happiness, the body dies but the spirit does not perish.
The body is the four great elements as form, the consciousness is the four aggregates as name. The emotions are of eighteen kinds, the objects of perception arise as twelve.
The spirit abides in nine places, birth and death do not cease and perish The foolish in the world do not hear, obscured and dark without the heavenly eye.
Self-anointed with the three defilements, the blind mind falsely sees, saying that death is like the time of birth, or saying that death is annihilation.
The consciousness spirit creates the three realms, the five places of good and bad. The silent going of the aggregates is like the response of an echo.
Desire, form, and formless existence all arise from past actions. Like seeds following their original form, the natural retribution is as one wishes.
The spirit is named after the body, like fire being named after its form Lighting a candle is called candle fire, following charcoal, grass, and dung as fuel.
When mental phenomena arise, they arise; when phenomena cease, they cease Arising and ceasing are like hail, constantly changing without recognizing themselves.
The consciousness spirit runs through the five paths, not changing in any place. Abandoning one body and receiving another body, it is like a wheel turning on the ground.
Just as a person lives in one body, leaving their old house behind. The spirit uses the body as a dwelling, but when the body perishes, the spirit does not perish.
| 如人一身居, 去其故室中,神以形为庐, 形坏神不亡;
The spirit dwells in the physical body, like a sparrow hiding in a container. When the container breaks, the sparrow flies away. When the body perishes, the spirit is reborn.
The ignorant always think of purity, pleasure, and the body, and have doubts. Dislike and hope are not essential. The Buddha says this is ignorance.
One root, two branches, three defilements, five more spread out. The thirteen things in the ocean, the abyss is exhausted, and there is joy in transcendence.
When the three things are cut off, one knows the body is worthless. The breath, warmth, and consciousness leave the body and pass on.
When lying dead on the ground, like grass, without any knowledge. Observing its appearance like this, it is just an illusion, yet foolishly greedy.
