Saṁyutta Nikāya — The Connected Discourses

SN1: Connected Discourses with Devatas

SN1:14 The Khattiya

1v.26 "The khattiya is the best of bipeds,
The ox, the best of quadrupeds;
A maiden is the best of wives,
The first born, the best of sons." [n.23] From this point on, wherever the text does not specify the identity of the speakers, it is implied that the first verse is spoken by a devata and the reply by the Buddha.

2v.27"The Buddha is the best of bipeds,
A steed, the best of quadrupeds;
An obedient woman is the best of wives,
A dutiful boy, the best of sons." sn.i.7

1"Khattiyo dvipadaṁ seṭṭho,
balībaddo catuppadaṁ;
Komārī seṭṭhā bhariyānaṁ,
yo ca puttāna pubbajo"ti.

2"Sambuddho dvipadaṁ seṭṭho,
ājānīyo catuppadaṁ;
Sussūsā seṭṭhā bhariyānaṁ,
yo ca puttānamassavo"ti.
