1Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Kosalans at Sala, a brahmin village. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus:
"Bhikkhus, just as among animals the lion, the king of beasts, is declared to be their chief, that is, with respect to strength, speed, and courage, so too, among the states conducive to enlightenment [n.235] In Be and Se, bodhipakkhiyā dhammā, though Ee has bodha-and SS have bodhapakkhikā. In the commentaries bodhipakkhiyā dhammā is the umbrella term for the seven sets of training factors repeatedly taught by the Buddha, but in the suttas the expression has a more flexible, less technical meaning. See the discussion by Gethin, Buddhist Path to Awakening, pp. 289–98. the faculty of wisdom is declared to be their chief, that is, for the attainment of enlightenment.
2"And what, bhikkhus, are the states conducive to enlightenment? The faculty of faith, bhikkhus, is a state conducive to enlightenment; it leads to enlightenment. The faculty of energy is a state conducive to enlightenment; it leads to enlightenment. The faculty of mindfulness is a state conducive to enlightenment; it leads to enlightenment. The faculty of concentration is a state conducive to enlightenment; it leads to enlightenment. The faculty of wisdom is a state conducive to enlightenment; it leads to enlightenment. sn.v.228
"Just as, bhikkhus, among animals the lion is declared to be their chief, so too, among the states conducive to enlightenment the faculty of wisdom is declared to be their chief, that is, for the attainment of enlightenment."
