1At Sāvatthī. There the Venerable Anuruddha addressed the bhikkhus thus: "Friends, bhikkhus!"

"Friend!" those bhikkhus replied. The Venerable Anuruddha said this:

2"Friends, these four establishments of mindfulness, when developed and cultivated, lead to the destruction of craving. What four? Here, friends, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body … feelings in feelings … mind in mind … phenomena in phenomena, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure in regard to the world. These four establishments of mindfulness, when developed and cultivated, lead to the destruction of craving."

1Sāvatthinidānaṁ. Tatra kho āyasmā anuruddho bhikkhū āmantesi: "āvuso bhikkhavo"ti.

"Āvuso"ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato anuruddhassa paccassosuṁ. Āyasmā anuruddho etadavoca:

2"Cattārome, āvuso, satipaṭṭhānā bhāvitā bahulīkatā taṇhākkhayāya saṁvattanti. Katame cattāro? Idhāvuso, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī vihārati … pe … vedanāsu … pe … citte … pe … dhammesu dhammānupassī vihārati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ – ime kho, āvuso, cattāro satipaṭṭhānā bhāvitā bahulīkatā taṇhākkhayāya saṁvattantī"ti.
