    It’s when a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.

    Вот, монахи, монах, отстранённый от чувственных удовольствий, отстранённый от неблагих состояний [ума], входит и пребывает в первой джхане, что сопровождается направлением и удержанием [ума на объекте], с озарённостью и приятным, которые возникли посредством этой отстранённости.

    Vitakkavicārānaṁ vūpasamā ajjhattaṁ sampasādanaṁ cetaso ekodibhāvaṁ avitakkaṁ avicāraṁ samādhijaṁ pītisukhaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

    As the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, they enter and remain in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and mind at one, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.

    С угасанием направления и удержания [ума на объекте], он входит и пребывает во второй джхане, в которой наличествуют внутренняя уверенность и единение ума, в которой нет направления и удержания, но есть озарённость и приятное, которые возникли посредством сосредоточения.

    Pītiyā ca virāgā upekkhako ca viharati sato ca sampajāno sukhañca kāyena paṭisaṁvedeti, yaṁ taṁ ariyā ācikkhanti: ‘upekkhako satimā sukhavihārī’ti tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

    And with the fading away of rapture, they enter and remain in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, ‘Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.’

    С угасанием восторга он пребывает невозмутимым, осознанным, бдительным, он ощущает приятное телом. Он входит и пребывает в третьей джхане, о которой Благородные говорят так: “Он невозмутим, осознан, пребывает в удовольствии”.

    Sukhassa ca pahānā dukkhassa ca pahānā pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṁ atthaṅgamā adukkhamasukhaṁ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṁ catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

    With the giving up of pleasure and pain and the disappearance of former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.

    С успокоением удовольствия и боли – как и с предшествующим угасанием радости и недовольства1, – он входит и пребывает в четвёртой джхане, которая ни-болезненна-ни-приятна, и в которой наличествует очищение осознанности посредством невозмутимости.

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro jhānāti.

    These are the four absorptions.

    And how does a mendicant who develops and cultivates the four absorptions slant, slope, and incline to extinguishment?

    И как, монахи, монах развивает и взращивает четыре джханы, [так что] направляется, склоняется, устремляется к ниббане?
