It’s when a mendicant realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. Piyo ca hoti manāpo ca garu ca bhāvanīyo ca vattā ca vacanakkhamo ca gambhīrañca kathaṁ kattā hoti, no ca aṭṭhāne niyojeti. They’re likable, agreeable, respected, and admired. They admonish you and they accept admonishment. They speak on deep matters. And they don’t urge you to do bad things.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, bāhirakānaṁ diṭṭhigatānaṁ yadidaṁ ‘no cassaṁ, no ca me siyā, na bhavissāmi, na me bhavissatī’ti. This is the best of the convictions of outsiders, that is: ‘I might not be, and it might not be mine. I will not be, and it will not be mine.’
“Saddho ca, puṇṇiya, bhikkhu hoti, no ca upasaṅkamitā; neva tāva tathāgataṁ dhammadesanā paṭibhāti. “Puṇṇiya, when a mendicant has faith but doesn’t approach, the Realized One doesn’t feel inspired to teach. Saddho ca, puṇṇiya, bhikkhu hoti upasaṅkamitā ca, no ca payirupāsitā …pe… When a mendicant has faith and approaches, but doesn’t pay homage … payirupāsitā ca, no ca paripucchitā … they pay homage, but don’t ask questions … paripucchitā ca, no ca ohitasoto dhammaṁ suṇāti … they ask questions, but don’t actively listen … ohitasoto ca dhammaṁ suṇāti, no ca sutvā dhammaṁ dhāreti … they actively listen, but don’t remember the teaching they’ve heard … sutvā ca dhammaṁ dhāreti, no ca dhātānaṁ dhammānaṁ atthaṁ upaparikkhati … they remember the teaching they’ve heard, but don’t reflect on the meaning of the teachings they’ve remembered … dhātānañca dhammānaṁ atthaṁ upaparikkhati no ca atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammappaṭipanno hoti … they reflect on the meaning of the teachings they’ve remembered, but, having understood the meaning and the teaching, they don’t practice accordingly … atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammappaṭipanno ca hoti, no ca kalyāṇavāco hoti kalyāṇavākkaraṇo poriyā vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya anelagaḷāya atthassa viññāpaniyā … they practice accordingly, but they’re not a good speaker. Their voice is not polished, clear, articulate, and doesn’t express the meaning … kalyāṇavāco ca hoti kalyāṇavākkaraṇo poriyā vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya anelagaḷāya atthassa viññāpaniyā, no ca sandassako hoti samādapako samuttejako sampahaṁsako sabrahmacārīnaṁ, neva tāva tathāgataṁ dhammadesanā paṭibhāti. They’re a good speaker, but they don’t educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire their spiritual companions. The Realized One doesn’t feel inspired to teach.
No ca khvassa evaṁ ñāṇaṁ hoti: ‘ettakā pāṇā imaṁ nagaraṁ pavisanti vā nikkhamanti vā’ti. He doesn’t know how many creatures enter or leave the citadel.

I see divine sights that are pleasant, sensual, and arousing, but I don’t hear divine sounds that are pleasant, sensual, and arousing.’ “Idha, mahāli, bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ekaṁsabhāvito samādhi hoti dibbānaṁ rūpānaṁ dassanāya piyarūpānaṁ kāmūpasaṁhitānaṁ rajanīyānaṁ, no ca kho dibbānaṁ saddānaṁ savanāya piyarūpānaṁ kāmūpasaṁhitānaṁ rajanīyānaṁ. “Mahāli, take a mendicant who has developed immersion to the eastern quarter in one aspect: so as to see divine sights but not to hear divine sounds. So puratthimāya disāya ekaṁsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṁ rūpānaṁ dassanāya piyarūpānaṁ kāmūpasaṁhitānaṁ rajanīyānaṁ, no ca kho dibbānaṁ saddānaṁ savanāya piyarūpānaṁ kāmūpasaṁhitānaṁ rajanīyānaṁ. When they have developed immersion for that purpose, Puratthimāya disāya dibbāni rūpāni passati piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṁhitāni rajanīyāni, no ca kho dibbāni saddāni suṇāti piyarūpāni kāmūpasaṁhitāni rajanīyāni. they see divine sights but don’t hear divine sounds. Evañhetaṁ, mahāli, hoti bhikkhuno puratthimāya disāya ekaṁsabhāvite samādhimhi dibbānaṁ rūpānaṁ dassanāya piyarūpānaṁ kāmūpasaṁhitānaṁ rajanīyānaṁ, no ca kho dibbānaṁ saddānaṁ savanāya piyarūpānaṁ kāmūpasaṁhitānaṁ rajanīyānaṁ. Take a mendicant who has developed immersion to the eastern quarter in one aspect: so as to hear divine sounds but not to see divine sights. ‘sīhanādañca samaṇo gotamo nadati, parisāsu ca nadati, no ca kho visārado nadatī’ti. ‘The ascetic Gotama roars his lion’s roar, and he roars it in the assemblies. But he doesn’t roar it boldly.’ ‘sīhanādañca samaṇo gotamo nadati, parisāsu ca nadati, visārado ca nadati, no ca kho naṁ pañhaṁ pucchanti …pe… ‘The ascetic Gotama roars his lion’s roar, he roars it in the assemblies, and he roars it boldly. But they don’t question him. … pañhañca naṁ pucchanti; no ca kho nesaṁ pañhaṁ puṭṭho byākaroti …pe… Or he doesn’t answer their questions. … pañhañca nesaṁ puṭṭho byākaroti; no ca kho pañhassa veyyākaraṇena cittaṁ ārādheti …pe… Or his answers are not satisfactory. … pañhassa ca veyyākaraṇena cittaṁ ārādheti; no ca kho sotabbaṁ maññanti …pe… Or they don’t think him worth listening to. … sotabbañcassa maññanti; no ca kho sutvā pasīdanti …pe… Or they’re not confident after listening. … sutvā cassa pasīdanti; no ca kho pasannākāraṁ karonti …pe… Or they don’t show their confidence. … pasannākārañca karonti; no ca kho tathattāya paṭipajjanti …pe… Or they don’t practice accordingly. … tathattāya ca paṭipajjanti; no ca kho paṭipannā ārādhentī’ti. Or they don’t succeed in their practice.’
no ca kho rājisiṁ upasaṅkamitvā ariyaṁ cakkavattivattaṁ pucchi. But he didn’t go to the royal sage and ask about the noble duty of a wheel-turning monarch. Tesaṁ sutvā dhammikañhi kho rakkhāvaraṇaguttiṁ saṁvidahi, no ca kho adhanānaṁ dhanamanuppadāsi. After listening to them, he provided just protection and security. But he did not provide money to the penniless in the realm.
Etehi cepi, cunda, aṅgehi samannāgataṁ brahmacariyaṁ hoti, no ca kho satthā hoti thero rattaññū cirapabbajito addhagato vayoanuppatto. Now suppose, Cunda, that a spiritual path possesses those factors. But the teacher is not senior, long standing, long gone forth, advanced in years, and reached the final stage of life. Now suppose that a spiritual path possesses those factors and the teacher is senior. Rasapaṭisaṁvedī kho pana so bhavaṁ gotamo āhāraṁ āhāreti, no ca rasarāgapaṭisaṁvedī. He eats experiencing the taste, but without experiencing greed for the taste.
brāhmaṇova nu kho pāṇātipātā paṭivirato adinnādānā paṭivirato kāmesumicchācārā paṭivirato musāvādā paṭivirato pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato samphappalāpā paṭivirato anabhijjhālu abyāpannacitto sammādiṭṭhi kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjeyya, no khattiyo, no vesso, no suddo”ti? Suppose a brahmin were to refrain from killing living creatures, stealing, and committing sexual misconduct; from using speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical; and from covetousness, malice, and wrong view. When their body breaks up, after death, they’d be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm. Would this happen only to an brahmin, and not to an aristocrat, a peasant, or a menial?” no → no ca (mr)
Ettake kho ahaṁ, bho, tassa bhoto gotamassa vaṇṇe pariyāpuṇāmi, no ca kho so bhavaṁ gotamo ettakavaṇṇo; This is the extent of Master Gotama’s praise that I have learned. But his praises are not confined to this,

Hoti kho so, gahapati, samayo, yā tā devatā ekajjhaṁ sannipatanti, tāsaṁ ekajjhaṁ sannipatitānaṁ vaṇṇanānattañhi kho paññāyati no ca ābhānānattaṁ. There comes a time, householder, when the deities gather together as one. When they do so, a difference in their color is evident, but not in their radiance. Tesaṁ ekaṁ gharaṁ pavesitānaṁ accinānattañhi kho paññāyetha, no ca ābhānānattaṁ; You can detect a difference in their flames, but not in their radiance. evameva kho, gahapati, hoti kho so samayo, yā tā devatā ekajjhaṁ sannipatanti tāsaṁ ekajjhaṁ sannipatitānaṁ vaṇṇanānattañhi kho paññāyati, no ca ābhānānattaṁ. Kathañca, bhikkhave, ussādanā ca hoti apasādanā ca, no ca dhammadesanā? And how is there flattering and rebuking without teaching Dhamma? Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, ussādanā ca hoti apasādanā ca, no ca dhammadesanā. That’s how there is flattering and rebuking without teaching Dhamma. Tatra, bhikkhave, yāyaṁ ussādanā ca apasādanā ca no ca dhammadesanā, sadukkho eso dhammo saupaghāto saupāyāso sapariḷāho; Flattering and rebuking without teaching Dhamma is a principle beset by pain, harm, stress, and fever, and it is the wrong way.
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, tā bhikkhuniyo nandakassa dhammadesanāya attamanā honti no ca kho paripuṇṇasaṅkappā”ti. In the same way, those nuns were uplifted by Nandaka’s Dhamma teaching, but they still haven’t found what they’re looking for.”

As a gentleman who has gone forth in faith from the lay life to homelessness, it’s not appropriate for you to admonish others without accepting admonition yourself.
‘kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, āturakāyo ceva hoti āturacitto ca, kittāvatā ca pana āturakāyo hi kho hoti no ca āturacitto’”ti? ‘Sir, how do you define someone ailing in body and ailing in mind, and someone ailing in body and healthy in mind’?” Kathañca, gahapati, āturakāyo hi kho hoti no ca āturacitto? And how is a person ailing in body and healthy in mind? Evaṁ kho, gahapati, āturakāyo hoti no ca āturacitto”ti. That’s how a person is ailing in body and healthy in mind.”

They experience the sight but no desire for the sight. Yaṁ taṁ, upavāṇa, bhikkhu cakkhunā rūpaṁ disvā rūpappaṭisaṁvedīhi kho hoti, no ca rūparāgappaṭisaṁvedī. Since this is so, Puna caparaṁ, upavāṇa, bhikkhu jivhāya rasaṁ sāyitvā rasappaṭisaṁvedīhi kho hoti, no ca rasarāgappaṭisaṁvedī. Asantañca ajjhattaṁ rasesu rāgaṁ ‘natthi me ajjhattaṁ rasesu rāgo’ti pajānāti …pe…. Next, take a mendicant who hears … smells … tastes … touches … Puna caparaṁ, upavāṇa, bhikkhu manasā dhammaṁ viññāya dhammappaṭisaṁvedīhi kho hoti, no ca dhammarāgappaṭisaṁvedī. sn35.70 Yaṁ taṁ, upavāṇa, bhikkhu manasā dhammaṁ viññāya dhammappaṭisaṁvedīhi kho hoti, no ca dhammarāgappaṭisaṁvedī. “Satisambojjhaṅgaṁ kho, āvuso, bhikkhu ārabbhamāno pajānāti ‘cittañca me suvimuttaṁ, thinamiddhañca me susamūhataṁ, uddhaccakukkuccañca me suppaṭivinītaṁ, āraddhañca me vīriyaṁ, aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi karomi, no ca līnan’ti …pe… As a mendicant rouses up the awakening factor of mindfulness, they understand: ‘My mind is well freed. I’ve eradicated dullness and drowsiness, and eliminated restlessness and remorse. My energy is roused up, and my mind is sharply focused, not sluggish.’ … upekkhāsambojjhaṅgaṁ āvuso, bhikkhu ārabbhamāno pajānāti ‘cittañca me suvimuttaṁ, thinamiddhañca me susamūhataṁ, uddhaccakukkuccañca me suppaṭivinītaṁ, āraddhañca me vīriyaṁ, aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi karomi, no ca līnan’”ti. As they rouse up the awakening factor of equanimity, they understand: ‘My mind is well freed. I’ve eradicated dullness and drowsiness, and eliminated restlessness and remorse.
