“Aññathā kho, brāhmaṇa, brāhmaṇā brāhmaṇaṁ tevijjaṁ paññāpenti, aññathā ca pana ariyassa vinaye tevijjo hotī”ti. “Yathā kathaṁ pana, bho gotama, ariyassa vinaye tevijjo hoti? Sādhu me bhavaṁ gotamo tathā dhammaṁ desetu yathā ariyassa vinaye tevijjo hotī”ti. “Tena hi, brāhmaṇa, suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.  
“Brahmin, a master of three knowledges according to the brahmins is quite different from a master of the three knowledges in the training of the Noble One.” “But Master Gotama, how is one a master of the three knowledges in the training of the Noble One? Master Gotama, please teach me this.” “Well then, brahmin, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

“‘Paññāvimutto, paññāvimutto’ti, āvuso, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, paññāvimutto vutto bhagavatā”ti? “Idhāvuso, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi …pe… paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati, paññāya ca naṁ pajānāti.  
“Reverend, they speak of a person called ‘freed by wisdom’. What is the one freed by wisdom that the Buddha spoke of?” “First, take a mendicant who, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and remains in the first absorption. And they understand that with wisdom.

“Aññathā kho, cunda, brāhmaṇā pacchābhūmakā kamaṇḍalukā sevālamālikā aggiparicārikā udakorohakā soceyyāni paññapenti, aññathā ca pana ariyassa vinaye soceyyaṁ hotī”ti. “Yathā kathaṁ pana, bhante, ariyassa vinaye soceyyaṁ hoti? Sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā tathā dhammaṁ desetu yathā ariyassa vinaye soceyyaṁ hotī”ti. “Tena hi, cunda, suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.  
“The purity advocated by the western brahmins is quite different from that in the training of the Noble One.” “But what, Master Gotama, is purity in the training of the Noble One? Master Gotama, please teach me this.” “Well then, brahmin, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

Katamā sā paññā”ti? “Ettakaparamāva mayaṁ, bho gotama, etasmiṁ atthe. Sādhu vata bhavantaṁyeva gotamaṁ paṭibhātu etassa bhāsitassa attho”ti. “Tena hi, brāhmaṇa, suṇohi, sādhukaṁ manasikarohi, bhāsissāmī”ti.

“‘Paññavā aneḷamūgo, paññavā aneḷamūgo’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ‘paññavā aneḷamūgo’ti vuccatī”ti? “Sattannaṁ kho, bhikkhu, bojjhaṅgānaṁ bhāvitattā bahulīkatattā ‘paññavā aneḷamūgo’ti vuccati. Katamesaṁ sattannaṁ?  
“Sir they speak of a person who is ‘wise, no idiot’. How is a person who is wise, no idiot defined?” “Mendicant, they’re called wise, no idiot because they’ve developed and cultivated the seven awakening factors. What seven?

Ahañca kho, bhikkhave, ariyassa vinaye udayagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ paññāpemi; yā ekantanibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattati. Katamā ca sā, bhikkhave, udayagāminī paṭipadā; yā ekantanibbidāya …pe… nibbānāya saṁvattati?  
But in the training of the Noble One I advocate a ‘get up and go’ practice which does lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. And what is that ‘get up and go’ practice? sn55.12
