Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo nīce kule paccājāto hoti, caṇḍālakule vā venakule vā nesādakule vā rathakārakule vā pukkusakule vā dalidde appannapānabhojane kasiravuttike, yattha kasirena ghāsacchādo labbhati.  It’s when a person is reborn in a low family—a family of corpse-workers, bamboo-workers, hunters, chariot-makers, or scavengers—poor, with little to eat or drink, where life is tough, and food and shelter are hard to find. 
venakule vā nesādakule vā → nesādakule vā veṇakule vā (si, pts1ed), veṇakule vā nesādakule vā (sya-all, km) 

aññātāro ca dullabhā”ti.  But it’s hard to find anyone who understands.” 

Appeva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethāti.  And I thought, “Hopefully I can find an end to this entire mass of suffering.”

Upārambhaṁ na sikkheyya,  They’d not persist in finding faults, 

na ca panassa sulabharūpo samasamo paññāyā”ti.  but it’s not easy to find his equal in wisdom.” 

So tadassādeti taṁ nikāmeti tena ca vittiṁ āpajjati, tatra ṭhito tadadhimutto tabbahulavihārī aparihīno kālaṁ kurumāno ākāsānañcāyatanūpagānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati.  They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying. If they’re set on that, committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die they’re reborn in the company of the gods of the dimension of infinite space. 
So tadassādeti taṁ nikāmeti tena ca vittiṁ āpajjati, tatra ṭhito tadadhimutto tabbahulavihārī aparihīno kālaṁ kurumāno viññāṇañcāyatanūpagānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati. 
They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying. If they’re set on that, committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die they’re reborn in the company of the gods of the dimension of infinite consciousness. 
So tadassādeti taṁ nikāmeti tena ca vittiṁ āpajjati, tatra ṭhito tadadhimutto tabbahulavihārī aparihīno kālaṁ kurumāno ākiñcaññāyatanūpagānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati. 
They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying. If they’re set on that, committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die they’re reborn in the company of the gods of the dimension of nothingness. 

aladdhā samathamattano;  if they don’t find serenity in themselves, 
samathamattano → samamattano (bj, sya-all, km); sammamattano (pts1ed) 

Kalinā tena sukhaṁ na vindati.  you’ll never find happiness that way. 

“Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, appāni ca sulabhāni ca, tāni ca anavajjāni.  “Mendicants, these four trifles are easy to find and are blameless.

These four trifles are easy to find and are blameless. 
Yato kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appena ca tuṭṭho hoti sulabhena ca, idamassāhaṁ aññataraṁ sāmaññaṅganti vadāmīti. 
When a mendicant is content with trifles that are easy to find, they have one of the factors of the ascetic life, I say. 
sāmaññaṅganti → sāmaññanti (mr) 
appena sulabhena ca; 
trifling, and easy to find, 

ayogakkhemino janā;  find no sanctuary from the yoke.

Te, bhikkhave, sattā sudullabhā lokasmiṁ ye cetasikena rogena muhuttampi ārogyaṁ paṭijānanti, aññatra khīṇāsavehi.  But it’s very hard to find any sentient beings in the world who can claim to be free of mental illness even for an hour, apart from those who have ended the defilements.

So tadassādeti, taṁ nikāmeti, tena ca vittiṁ āpajjati;  They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying.

And they are usually presented with agreeable things by them, rarely with disagreeable ones. 

yadi vā rañño khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa, yadi vā raṭṭhikassa pettanikassa, yadi vā senāya senāpatikassa, yadi vā gāmagāmaṇikassa, yadi vā pūgagāmaṇikassa, ye vā pana kulesu paccekādhipaccaṁ kārenti, vuddhiyeva pāṭikaṅkhā, no parihāni.  “Mahānāma, you can expect only growth, not decline, when you find five qualities in any gentleman—whether he’s an anointed aristocratic king, an appointed or hereditary official, an army general, a village chief, a guild chief, or a ruler of his own clan.

It’s hard to find someone gone forth when old who is sophisticated, well-presented, and learned, who can teach Dhamma, and has memorized the monastic law. 
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato dullabho vuḍḍhapabbajitoti. 
It’s hard to find someone gone forth when old who has these five qualities.” 

Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato dullabho vuḍḍhapabbajito.  “Mendicants, it’s hard to find someone gone forth when old who has five qualities. 
Dullabho, bhikkhave, vuḍḍhapabbajito suvaco, dullabho suggahitaggāhī, dullabho padakkhiṇaggāhī, dullabho dhammakathiko, dullabho vinayadharo. 
It’s hard to find someone gone forth when old who is easy to admonish, retains what they learn, and learns respectfully, who can teach the Dhamma, and has memorized the monastic law. 
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato dullabho vuḍḍhapabbajito”ti. 
It’s hard to find someone gone forth when old who has these five qualities.”

Makkhī dhammaṁ suṇāti makkhapariyuṭṭhito, upārambhacitto dhammaṁ suṇāti randhagavesī, dhammadesake āhatacitto hoti khīlajāto, duppañño hoti jaḷo eḷamūgo, anaññāte aññātamānī hoti.  They listen to the teaching bent only on putting it down. They listen to the teaching with a hostile, fault-finding mind. They’re antagonistic to the teacher, planning to attack them. They’re witless, dull, and idiotic. And they think they know what they don’t know. 
upārambhacitto → saupārambhacitto (sya-all, km) | khīlajāto → khilajāto (bj, sya-all, pts1ed) 
Amakkhī dhammaṁ suṇāti na makkhapariyuṭṭhito, anupārambhacitto dhammaṁ suṇāti na randhagavesī, dhammadesake anāhatacitto hoti akhīlajāto, paññavā hoti ajaḷo aneḷamūgo, na anaññāte aññātamānī hoti. 
They don’t listen to the teaching bent only on putting it down. They don’t listen to the teaching with a hostile, fault-finding mind. They’re not antagonistic to the teacher, and not planning to attack them. They’re wise, bright, and clever. And they don’t think they know what they don’t know. 

Bahuno janassa appiyo hoti amanāpo, verabahulo ca hoti, vajjabahulo ca, sammūḷho kālaṁ karoti, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati.  Most people find you unlikable and disagreeable. You have lots of enmity and many faults. You feel lost when you die. And when your body breaks up, after death, you’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. 
Bahuno janassa piyo hoti manāpo, na verabahulo hoti, na vajjabahulo, asammūḷho kālaṁ karoti, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati. 
Most people find you dear and agreeable. You have little enmity and few faults. You don’t feel lost when you die. And when your body breaks up, after death, you’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm. 

Bahuno janassa appiyo hoti amanāpo, luddo ca hoti, vippaṭisārī ca, sammūḷho kālaṁ karoti, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati.  Most people find you unlikable and disagreeable. You’re cruel and remorseful. You feel lost when you die. And when your body breaks up, after death, you’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. 
Bahuno janassa piyo hoti manāpo, aluddo ca hoti, avippaṭisārī ca, asammūḷho kālaṁ karoti, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati. 
Most people find you likable and agreeable. You’re neither cruel nor remorseful. You don’t feel lost when you die. And when your body breaks up, after death, you’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm. 

Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammūpasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ.  A noble disciple whose mind is unswerving finds inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and finds joy connected with the teaching. 
Ujugatacitto kho pana, mahānāma, ariyasāvako labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammūpasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ. 
A noble disciple whose mind is unswerving finds inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and finds joy connected with the teaching. 

Yasmiṁ, āvuso, samaye manobhāvanīyo bhikkhu rattiyā paccūsasamayaṁ paccuṭṭhāya nisinno hoti pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā, ojaṭṭhāyissa tasmiṁ samaye kāyo hoti phāsussa hoti buddhānaṁ sāsanaṁ manasi kātuṁ.  For at that time their body is full of vitality and they find it easy to focus on the instructions of the Buddhas.” 

“Ārabbhadhātuyā sati ārabbhavanto sattā paññāyantī”ti?  “Since this is so, do we find sentient beings who initiate activity?” 
“Upakkamadhātuyā sati upakkamavanto sattā paññāyantī”ti? 
“Since this is so, do we find sentient beings who have energy?” 

‘Mā maṁ jaññū’ti icchati, ‘mā maṁ jaññū’ti saṅkappati, ‘mā maṁ jaññū’ti vācaṁ bhāsati, ‘mā maṁ jaññū’ti kāyena parakkamati. So tassa vacīduccaritassa paṭicchādanahetu …pe… so tassa manoduccaritassa paṭicchādanahetu …pe… ‘mā maṁ jaññū’ti kāyena parakkamati.  They wish, plan, speak, and act with the thought: ‘May no-one find me out!’ 
‘mā maṁ jaññū’ti icchati. 
they wish, ‘May no-one find me out!’ 

Acchariyā hete, āvuso, puggalā dullabhā lokasmiṁ, ye amataṁ dhātuṁ kāyena phusitvā viharanti.  Because it’s incredibly rare to find individuals in the world who have direct meditative experience of the element free of death. 
Acchariyā hete, āvuso, puggalā dullabhā lokasmiṁ ye gambhīraṁ atthapadaṁ paññāya ativijjha passantī”ti. 
Because it’s incredibly rare to find individuals in the world who see the meaning of a deep saying with penetrating wisdom.” 

Tasmātiha tvaṁ, soṇa, vīriyasamathaṁ adhiṭṭhaha, indriyānañca samataṁ paṭivijjha, tattha ca nimittaṁ gaṇhāhī”ti.  So, Soṇa, you should focus on energy and serenity, find a balance of the faculties, and learn the pattern of this situation.”

This kind of person rises up then finds a footing. 

bhikkhūsu theresu ceva navesu ca majjhimesu ca upārambhacitto dhammaṁ suṇāti randhagavesī,  They listen to the teaching with a hostile, fault-finding mind. 
bhikkhūsu theresu ceva navesu ca majjhimesu ca anupārambhacitto dhammaṁ suṇāti na randhagavesī, 
They don’t listen to the teaching with a hostile, fault-finding mind. 
saddhammaṁ sotumicchati.

‘mā me idaṁ paro aññāsī’ti.  ‘Don’t let others find this out about me!’

“gaccha tvaṁ, ambho purisa, pavattamaṁsaṁ jānāhī”ti.  “Worthy, please find out if there is any meat ready for sale.” 

Tayidaṁ sammukhībhūtaṁ,  If you find yourself in their presence, 
Tayidaṁ → tassidaṁ (bj, mr) 
yaṁ lokasmiṁ sudullabhaṁ; 
so hard to find in the world, 

“imā devatā amukamhā vā amukamhā vā devanikāyā”ti;  and find out which orders of gods those deities come from? 
“imā devatā amukamhā vā amukamhā vā devanikāyā”ti, tā ca devatā jāneyyaṁ: 
and find out which orders of gods those deities come from; 

gacchantopi sukhaṁ sātaṁ nādhigacchati,  You find no happiness or pleasure while walking … 
gacchantopi sukhaṁ sātaṁ adhigacchati, 
You find happiness or pleasure while walking … 

Ariyānaṁ adassanakamyataṁ appahāya, ariyadhammassa asotukamyataṁ appahāya, upārambhacittataṁ appahāya—  Not wanting to see the noble ones, not wanting to hear the teaching of the noble ones, and a fault-finding mind. 
ariyadhammassa → ariyadhammaṁ (sya-all, pts1ed) 
Tayome, bhikkhave, dhamme appahāya abhabbo ariyānaṁ adassanakamyataṁ pahātuṁ ariyadhammassa asotukamyataṁ pahātuṁ upārambhacittataṁ pahātuṁ. 
Without giving up three things you can’t give up not wanting to see the noble ones, not wanting to hear the teaching of the noble ones, and a fault-finding mind. 
ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo dhamme appahāya abhabbo ariyānaṁ adassanakamyataṁ pahātuṁ ariyadhammassa asotukamyataṁ pahātuṁ upārambhacittataṁ pahātuṁ. 
Without giving up these three things you can’t give up not wanting to see the noble ones, not wanting to hear the teaching of the noble ones, and a fault-finding mind. 
So dussīlo samāno abhabbo ariyānaṁ adassanakamyataṁ pahātuṁ ariyadhammassa asotukamyataṁ pahātuṁ upārambhacittataṁ pahātuṁ. 
When you’re unethical you can’t give up not wanting to see the noble ones, not wanting to hear the teaching of the noble ones, and a fault-finding mind. 
So upārambhacitto samāno abhabbo muṭṭhassaccaṁ pahātuṁ asampajaññaṁ pahātuṁ cetaso vikkhepaṁ pahātuṁ. 
When you’ve got a fault-finding mind you can’t give up unmindfulness, lack of situational awareness, and a scattered mind. 
Ariyānaṁ adassanakamyataṁ pahāya, ariyadhammassa asotukamyataṁ pahāya, upārambhacittataṁ pahāya— 
Not wanting to see the noble ones, not wanting to hear the teaching of the noble ones, and a fault-finding mind. 
Tayome, bhikkhave, dhamme pahāya bhabbo ariyānaṁ adassanakamyataṁ pahātuṁ ariyadhammassa asotukamyataṁ pahātuṁ upārambhacittataṁ pahātuṁ. 
After giving up three things you can give up not wanting to see the noble ones, not wanting to hear the teaching of the noble ones, and a fault-finding mind. 
ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo dhamme pahāya bhabbo ariyānaṁ adassanakamyataṁ pahātuṁ ariyadhammassa asotukamyataṁ pahātuṁ upārambhacittataṁ pahātuṁ. 
After giving up these three things you can give up not wanting to see the noble ones, not wanting to hear the teaching of the noble ones, and a fault-finding mind. 
So sīlavā samāno bhabbo ariyānaṁ adassanakamyataṁ pahātuṁ ariyadhammassa asotukamyataṁ pahātuṁ upārambhacittataṁ pahātuṁ. 
When you’re ethical you can give up not wanting to see the noble ones, not wanting to hear the teaching of the noble ones, and a fault-finding mind. 
So anupārambhacitto samāno bhabbo muṭṭhassaccaṁ pahātuṁ asampajaññaṁ pahātuṁ cetaso vikkhepaṁ pahātuṁ. 
When you don’t have a fault-finding mind you can give up unmindfulness, lack of situational awareness, and a scattered mind. 

‘tena hi, samma, idha khanāhī’ti. So tatra khananto nādhigaccheyya.  ‘Well then, my dear friend, dig here.’ So they dig there, but don’t find anything. 
So tatrapi khananto nādhigaccheyya.

Kalinā tena sukhaṁ na vindati.  you’ll never find happiness that way.

Dukkaraṁ pavivekaṁ durabhiramaṁ.  It’s hard to maintain seclusion and hard to find joy in it. 
Mahā, upāli, attabhāvo gambhīre gādhaṁ vindati. 
Because his large life-form finds a footing in the depths.

Paritto, upāli, attabhāvo gambhīre gādhaṁ na vindati. 
Because their little life-form finds no footing in the depths.

Kaṁ nu khvajja samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā payirupāseyyāma, yaṁ no payirupāsato cittaṁ pasīdeyyā”ti?  Now, what ascetic or brahmin might I pay homage to today, paying homage to whom my mind might find peace?” 
Appeva nāma devassa pūraṇaṁ kassapaṁ payirupāsato cittaṁ pasīdeyyā”ti. 
Hopefully in so doing your mind will find peace.”

Hopefully in so doing your mind will find peace.”

Ehi tvaṁ, tāta ambaṭṭha, yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkama; upasaṅkamitvā samaṇaṁ gotamaṁ jānāhi, yadi vā taṁ bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ tathāsantaṁyeva saddo abbhuggato, yadi vā no tathā.  Please, dear Ambaṭṭha, go to the ascetic Gotama and find out whether or not he lives up to his reputation. 
“Yathā kathaṁ panāhaṁ, bho, taṁ bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ jānissāmi: ‘yadi vā taṁ bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ tathāsantaṁyeva saddo abbhuggato, yadi vā no tathā. Yadi vā so bhavaṁ gotamo tādiso, yadi vā na tādiso’”ti? 
“But sir, how shall I find out whether or not the ascetic Gotama lives up to his reputation?” 

‘na kho so sattāvāso sulabharūpo, yo mayā anāvutthapubbo iminā dīghena addhunā aññatra suddhāvāsehi devehi.  ‘It’s not easy to find an abode of sentient beings where I haven’t previously abided in all this long time, except for the gods of the pure abodes.

“obhāsametaṁ ñassāma, yaṁvipāko bhavissati, sacchikatvāva naṁ gamissāmā”ti.  “We shall find out what has caused that light, and only when we have realized it shall we go to it.”

“Worthy sir, please now find another high priest to manage the affairs of state for you. 
“aññaṁ dāni bhavanto purohitaṁ pariyesantu, yo bhavantānaṁ rajje anusāsissati. 
“Good fellows, please now find another high priest to manage the affairs of state for you. 
“aññaṁ dāni bhavanto ācariyaṁ pariyesantu, yo bhavantānaṁ mante vācessati. 
“Good fellows, please now find another tutor to teach you to recite the hymns. 
“yā bhotīnaṁ icchati, sakāni vā ñātikulāni gacchatu aññaṁ vā bhattāraṁ pariyesatu. 
“Ladies, please do whatever you wish, whether returning to your own families, or finding another husband. 

Tasmā ayaṁ puriso uccāvacamāpajjati.  That’s why a person finds themselves in states high and low. 

‘yannūnāhaṁ yena so satthavāso tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ, appeva nāmettha kiñci upakaraṇaṁ adhigaccheyyan’ti.  ‘Why don’t I go to that caravan’s campsite? Hopefully I’ll find something useful there.’ 

Anucchavikassa yadānulomikaṁ,  the peerless renunciate will quickly find 
Sukhapphalaṁ kariya sukhāni vindati; 
finding happiness as a fruit of happy deeds. 

‘mā me idaṁ paro aññāsī’ti.  ‘Don’t let others find this out about me!’ 

“Durabhisambhavāni hi kho, bho gotama, araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni, dukkaraṁ pavivekaṁ, durabhiramaṁ ekatte,  “But worthy Gotama, remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest are challenging. It’s hard to maintain seclusion and hard to find joy in solitude. 
‘durabhisambhavāni hi kho araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni, dukkaraṁ pavivekaṁ, durabhiramaṁ ekatte,

Ṭhānaṁ kho panetaṁ, āvuso, vijjati yaṁ taṁ bhikkhuṁ bhikkhū jāneyyuṁ: 
But it’s possible that the mendicants do find out that that mendicant 

saṅghe aveccappasādena samannāgatomhī’ti labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammūpasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ;  the Saṅgha,’ they find inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and find joy connected with the teaching. 
‘Yathodhi kho pana me cattaṁ vantaṁ muttaṁ pahīnaṁ paṭinissaṭṭhan’ti labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammūpasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ; 
Thinking: ‘I have discarded, eliminated, released, given up, and relinquished to this extent,’ they find inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and find joy connected with the teaching. 

Na kho pana so, sāriputta, saṁsāro sulabharūpo yo mayā asaṁsaritapubbo iminā dīghena addhunā, aññatra suddhāvāsehi devehi.  But it’s not easy to find a realm that I haven’t previously transmigrated to in all this long time, except for the gods of the pure abodes. 
Na kho pana so → na kho paneso (bj, sya-all) 
Na kho pana sā, sāriputta, upapatti sulabharūpā yā mayā anupapannapubbā iminā dīghena addhunā, aññatra suddhāvāsehi devehi.

Doing so, you’ll find that you’re healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably.’ 

Te upārambhānisaṁsā ceva dhammaṁ pariyāpuṇanti itivādappamokkhānisaṁsā ca.  They memorize the teaching for the sake of finding fault and winning debates.

He doesn’t memorize the teaching for the sake of finding fault and winning debates.

So tattha pattavaṭṭiṁ vinibbhujanto pheggumpi nādhigaccheyya, kuto sāraṁ?  But they wouldn’t even find sapwood, much less heartwood. 
Siyā hi, bho gotama, hatthiṁ pabhinnaṁ āsajja purisassa sotthibhāvo, na tveva bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ āsajja siyā purisassa sotthibhāvo. 
For a person might find safety after attacking a rutting elephant, but not after attacking the worthy Gotama. 
Siyā hi, bho gotama, pajjalitaṁ aggikkhandhaṁ āsajja purisassa sotthibhāvo, na tveva bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ āsajja siyā purisassa sotthibhāvo. 
A person might find safety after attacking a blazing mass of fire, but not after attacking the worthy Gotama. 
Siyā hi, bho gotama, āsīvisaṁ ghoravisaṁ āsajja purisassa sotthibhāvo, na tveva bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ āsajja siyā purisassa sotthibhāvo. 
They might find safety after attacking a poisonous viper, but not after attacking the worthy Gotama. 

yannūnāhaṁ taṁ yakkhaṁ jāneyyaṁ—  Why don’t I find out?”

Balatā esā, bhikkhave, diṭṭhisampannassa puggalassa yaṁ tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye desiyamāne labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammūpasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ.  The strength of a person accomplished in view is that, when the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One are being taught, they find inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and find joy connected with the teaching. 

“na cevaññaṁ uttari nissaraṇaṁ dakkhissasi, yāvadeva ca pana kilamathassa vighātassa bhāgī bhavissasi.  you will never find another escape beyond this, and you will eventually get weary and frustrated. 

Appeva nāma tumhehi akkosiyamānānaṁ paribhāsiyamānānaṁ rosiyamānānaṁ vihesiyamānānaṁ siyā cittassa aññathattaṁ, yathā taṁ dūsī māro labhetha otāran’ti.  Hopefully by doing this we can upset their minds so that Māra Dūsī can find a vulnerability.”’ 
etha, tumhe bhikkhū sīlavante kalyāṇadhamme akkosatha paribhāsatha rosetha vihesetha, appeva nāma tumhehi akkosiyamānānaṁ paribhāsiyamānānaṁ rosiyamānānaṁ vihesiyamānānaṁ siyā cittassa aññathattaṁ, yathā taṁ dūsī māro labhetha otāran’ti. 
He told them to abuse you in the hope of upsetting your minds so that he can find a vulnerability. 
appeva nāma tumhehi sakkariyamānānaṁ garukariyamānānaṁ māniyamānānaṁ pūjiyamānānaṁ siyā cittassa aññathattaṁ, yathā taṁ dūsī māro labhetha otāran”’ti. 
Hopefully by doing this we can upset their minds so that Māra Dūsī can find a vulnerability.”’ 
appeva nāma tumhehi sakkariyamānānaṁ garukariyamānānaṁ māniyamānānaṁ pūjiyamānānaṁ siyā cittassa aññathattaṁ, yathā taṁ dūsī māro labhetha otāran”ti. 
in the hope of upsetting your minds so that he can find a vulnerability. 

“Handāhaṁ, bhante, gacchāmi yāva jānāmi yadi vā upāli gahapati samaṇassa gotamassa sāvakattaṁ upagato yadi vā no”ti.  “Well, sir, I’d better go and find out whether or not Upāli has become Gotama’s disciple.” 
“Gaccha tvaṁ, tapassi, jānāhi yadi vā upāli gahapati samaṇassa gotamassa sāvakattaṁ upagato yadi vā no”ti. 
“Go, Tapassī, and find out whether or not Upāli has become Gotama’s disciple.” 
“Handa cāhaṁ, tapassi, gacchāmi yāva cāhaṁ sāmaṁyeva jānāmi yadi vā upāli gahapati samaṇassa gotamassa sāvakattaṁ upagato yadi vā no”ti. 
Well, Tapassī, I’d better go and find out for myself whether or not Upāli has become Gotama’s disciple.” 

ekāsanabhojanaṁ kho, ahaṁ, bhikkhave, bhuñjamāno appābādhatañca sañjānāmi appātaṅkatañca lahuṭṭhānañca balañca phāsuvihārañca.  Doing so, I find that I’m healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably.

Aññatra kho pana, bhikkhave, tumhepi rattibhojanā bhuñjamānā appābādhatañca sañjānissatha appātaṅkatañca lahuṭṭhānañca balañca phāsuvihārañcā”ti. 
Doing so, you’ll find that you’re healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably.”

Doing so, we find that we’re healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably. 

“Ito kho so, vaccha, ekanavuto kappo yamahaṁ anussarāmi, nābhijānāmi kañci ājīvakaṁ saggūpagaṁ aññatra ekena;  “Vaccha, when I recollect the past ninety-one eons, I can’t find any Ājīvaka ascetics who have gone to heaven, except one; 
kho so, vaccha, ekanavuto kappo → ito kho vaccha ekanavute kappe (mr) 

“gacchatha, bhikkhave, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa nivesane tiṇaṁ jānāthā”ti.  “Mendicants, go to Ghaṭīkāra’s home and find some grass.” 

Saṁvijjante kho, bho raṭṭhapāla, imasmiṁ rājakule hatthikāyāpi assakāyāpi rathakāyāpi pattikāyāpi, amhākaṁ āpadāsu pariyodhāya vattissanti.  In this royal court you can find divisions of elephants, cavalry, chariots, and infantry. They will serve to defend us from any threats. Yet you said: 
Saṁvijjati kho, bho raṭṭhapāla, imasmiṁ rājakule pahūtaṁ hiraññasuvaṇṇaṁ bhūmigatañca vehāsagatañca. 
In this royal court you can find abundant gold, both coined and uncoined, stored in dungeons and towers. Yet you said: 

Ehi tvaṁ, tāta uttara, yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkama; upasaṅkamitvā samaṇaṁ gotamaṁ jānāhi, yadi vā taṁ bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ tathā santaṁyeva saddo abbhuggato, yadi vā no tathā;  “Please, dear Uttara, go to the ascetic Gotama and find out whether or not he lives up to his reputation. 
“Yathā kathaṁ panāhaṁ, bho, taṁ bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ jānissāmi yadi vā taṁ bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ tathā santaṁyeva saddo abbhuggato, yadi vā no tathā; 
“But sir, how shall I find out whether or not the ascetic Gotama lives up to his reputation?” 

“ghosopi kho eso dullabho lokasmiṁ—yadidaṁ ‘buddho’ti.  “It’s hard to even find the word ‘awakened one’ in the world. 
yadidaṁ ‘buddho’ti → yadidaṁ buddho buddhoti (mr) 
sambuddhānaṁ abhiṇhaso. 
is hard to find again. 
sallakatto anuttaro. 
is hard to find again. 

Idha katamaṁ tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, puggalaṁ katamāya parisāya bahulaṁ samanupassasi—  in which of these two groups of people do you usually find such a person?” 
“Yvāyaṁ, bho udena, puggalo nevattantapo nāttaparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto na parantapo na paraparitāpanānuyogamanuyutto so anattantapo aparantapo diṭṭheva dhamme nicchāto nibbuto sītībhūto sukhappaṭisaṁvedī brahmabhūtena attanā viharati; 
“I usually find such a person in 

Tamenaṁ samannesamāno evaṁ jānāti:  Scrutinizing them they find: 
Tamenaṁ samannesamāno evaṁ jānāti:

manussesvetaṁ na vijjati;  you can’t find such distinctions. 

“Ye te, māṇava, brāhmaṇā pañca dhamme paññapenti puññassa kiriyāya kusalassa ārādhanāya, ime tvaṁ pañca dhamme kattha bahulaṁ samanupassasi—  “Of the five things that the brahmins prescribe for making merit and succeeding in the skillful, where do you usually find them: 
Yeme, bho gotama, brāhmaṇā pañca dhamme paññapenti puññassa kiriyāya kusalassa ārādhanāya, imāhaṁ pañca dhamme pabbajitesu bahulaṁ samanupassāmi appaṁ gahaṭṭhesū”ti. 
Of the five things that the brahmins prescribe for making merit and succeeding in the skillful, I usually find them among renunciates, and less so among laypeople.” 
So ‘saccavādīmhī’ti labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammūpasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ. 
Thinking, ‘I’m truthful,’ they find inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and find joy connected with the teaching. 
So ‘cāgabahulomhī’ti labhati atthavedaṁ, labhati dhammavedaṁ, labhati dhammūpasaṁhitaṁ pāmojjaṁ. 
Thinking, ‘I’m very generous,’ they find inspiration in the meaning and the teaching, and find joy connected with the teaching. 

Lokāmisādhimuttassa kho, sunakkhatta, purisapuggalassa tappatirūpī ceva kathā saṇṭhāti, tadanudhammañca anuvitakketi, anuvicāreti, tañca purisaṁ bhajati, tena ca vittiṁ āpajjati;  Such an individual engages in pertinent conversation, thinking and considering in line with that. They associate with that kind of person, and they find it satisfying. 
āneñjapaṭisaṁyuttāya ca pana kathāya kacchamānāya na sussūsati, na sotaṁ odahati, na aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhāpeti, na ca taṁ purisaṁ bhajati, na ca tena vittiṁ āpajjati. 
But when talk connected with the imperturbable is going on they don’t want to listen. They don’t actively listen or try to understand. They don’t associate with that kind of person, and they don’t find it satisfying. 
upaṭṭhāpeti → upaṭṭhapeti (bj, sya-all, km, pts1ed) 
api nu so puriso tassa purisassa sussūseyya, sotaṁ odaheyya, aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhāpeyya, tañca purisaṁ bhajeyya, tena ca vittiṁ āpajjeyyā”ti? 
Would that person want to listen to that other person? Would they actively listen and try to understand? Would they associate with that person, and find it satisfying?”

Ākiñcaññāyatanādhimuttassa kho, sunakkhatta, purisapuggalassa tappatirūpī ceva kathā saṇṭhāti, tadanudhammañca anuvitakketi, anuvicāreti, tañca purisaṁ bhajati, tena ca vittiṁ āpajjati; 
Such an individual engages in pertinent conversation, thinking and considering in line with that. They associate with that kind of person, and they find it satisfying.

Such an individual engages in pertinent conversation, thinking and considering in line with that. They associate with that kind of person, and they find it satisfying. 
ākiñcaññāyatanapaṭisaṁyuttāya ca pana kathāya kacchamānāya na sussūsati, na sotaṁ odahati, na aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhāpeti, na ca taṁ purisaṁ bhajati, na ca tena vittiṁ āpajjati. 
But when talk connected with the dimension of nothingness is going on they don’t want to listen. They don’t actively listen or try to understand. They don’t associate with that kind of person, and they don’t find it satisfying. 
Sammā nibbānādhimuttassa kho, sunakkhatta, purisapuggalassa tappatirūpī ceva kathā saṇṭhāti, tadanudhammañca anuvitakketi, anuvicāreti, tañca purisaṁ bhajati, tena ca vittiṁ āpajjati; 
Such an individual engages in pertinent conversation, thinking and considering in line with that. They associate with that kind of person, and they find it satisfying. 
nevasaññānāsaññāyatanapaṭisaṁyuttāya ca pana kathāya kacchamānāya na sussūsati, na sotaṁ odahati, na aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhāpeti, na ca taṁ purisaṁ bhajati, na ca tena vittiṁ āpajjati. 
But when talk connected with the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception is going on they don’t want to listen. They don’t actively listen or try to understand. They don’t associate with that kind of person, and they don’t find it satisfying. 

Yassa kassaci, bhikkhave, kāyagatāsati abhāvitā abahulīkatā, labhati tassa māro otāraṁ, labhati tassa māro ārammaṇaṁ.  When a mendicant has not developed or cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them. 
ārammaṇaṁ → āramaṇaṁ (?) 
api nu taṁ garukaṁ silāguḷaṁ allamattikāpuñje labhetha otāran”ti? 
Would that heavy stone ball find an entry into that mound of wet clay?” 
“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yassa kassaci kāyagatāsati abhāvitā abahulīkatā, labhati tassa māro otāraṁ, labhati tassa māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
“In the same way, when a mendicant has not developed or cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them. 
“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yassa kassaci kāyagatāsati abhāvitā abahulīkatā, labhati tassa māro otāraṁ, labhati tassa māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
“In the same way, when a mendicant has not developed or cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them. 
“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yassa kassaci kāyagatāsati abhāvitā abahulīkatā, labhati tassa māro otāraṁ, labhati tassa māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
“In the same way, when a mendicant has not developed or cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them.

Would that light ball of string find an entry into that door-panel made entirely of hardwood?” 
“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yassa kassaci kāyagatāsati bhāvitā bahulīkatā, na tassa labhati māro otāraṁ, na tassa labhati māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
“In the same way, when a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra cannot find a vulnerability and doesn’t get hold of them. 
“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yassa kassaci kāyagatāsati bhāvitā bahulīkatā, na tassa labhati māro otāraṁ, na tassa labhati māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
“In the same way, when a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra cannot find a vulnerability and doesn’t get hold of them. 
“Evameva kho, bhikkhave, yassa kassaci kāyagatāsati bhāvitā bahulīkatā, na tassa labhati māro otāraṁ, na tassa labhati māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
“In the same way, when a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, Māra cannot find a vulnerability and doesn’t get hold of them. 

Sace labhetha nipakaṁ sahāyaṁ,  If you find an alert companion, 
No ce labhetha nipakaṁ sahāyaṁ, 
If you find no alert companion, 

Mañcepi rājāno jāneyyuṁ, mampi rājāno gahetvā vividhā kammakāraṇā kāreyyuṁ—  If the kings find out about me, they will inflict the same kinds of punishments on me!’

Tathārūpe kule paccājāyati dalidde appannapānabhojane kasiravuttike, yattha kasirena ghāsacchādo labbhati. 
Such families are poor, with little to eat or drink, where life is tough, and food and shelter are hard to find. 

Sace āyasmato channassa natthi sappāyāni bhojanāni, ahaṁ āyasmato channassa sappāyāni bhojanāni pariyesissāmi.  If you don’t have any suitable food, we’ll find it for you. 
Sace āyasmato channassa natthi sappāyāni bhesajjāni, ahaṁ āyasmato channassa sappāyāni bhesajjāni pariyesissāmi. 
If you don’t have suitable medicine, we’ll find it for you. 
Sace āyasmato channassa natthi patirūpā upaṭṭhākā, ahaṁ āyasmantaṁ channaṁ upaṭṭhahissāmi. 
If you don’t have a capable carer, we’ll find one for you. 

Devā manussā idha vā huraṁ vā,  in this world and the world beyond, they never find them,

Ujjhānasaññisutta  Fault-Finding Deities 
Atha kho sambahulā ujjhānasaññikā devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā vehāsaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. 
Then, late at night, several glorious deities of the host of the fault-finders, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, and stood in the air. 
Atha kho tā devatāyo bhiyyoso mattāya ujjhāyantiyo vehāsaṁ abbhuggañchuṁ. 
Then those deities, becoming even more fault-finding, flew up in the air. 

yattha kicchena labbhati;  are hard to find. 
yatthākicchena labbhati. 
are easy to find. 

“Dullabhā, bhagavā, yadidaṁ tuṭṭhī”ti.  “Such contentment, Blessed One, is hard to find.” 
“Dullabhaṁ vāpi labhanti, 
“They find it even though it’s hard,” 

dāyādā vindare dhanaṁ;  nor will your heirs find wealth. 

Na hi taṁ sulabhaṁ hoti,  For happiness is not easy to find 

Nevajjhagā piyataramattanā kvaci;  one finds no-one dearer than oneself. 

Idha, mahārāja, ekacco puggalo nīce kule paccājāto hoti, caṇḍālakule vā venakule vā nesādakule vā rathakārakule vā pukkusakule vā dalidde appannapānabhojane kasiravuttike, yattha kasirena ghāsacchādo labbhati.  It’s when a person is reborn in a low family—a family of corpse-workers, bamboo-workers, hunters, chariot-makers, or scavengers—poor, with little to eat or drink, where life is tough, and food and shelter are hard to find.

mārasenāpi nājjhagā”ti.  they never find you.” 

Tena kho pana samayena māro pāpimā sattavassāni bhagavantaṁ anubandho hoti otārāpekkho otāraṁ alabhamāno.  Now at that time Māra the Wicked had been following the Buddha for seven years hoping to find a vulnerability without success. 
Abhabbo dānāhaṁ, bhante, puna bhagavantaṁ upasaṅkamituṁ yadidaṁ otārāpekkho”ti. 
Now I’m not able to approach the Buddha again in hopes of finding a vulnerability.” 
Apettha muduṁ vindema, 
‘Perhaps I’ll find something tender,’ it thought, 
Aladdhā tattha assādaṁ, 
But finding nothing tasty, 

nayidha sattupalabbhati.  you won’t find a sentient being here. 

Kalinā tena sukhaṁ na vindati.  you’ll never find happiness that way. 

Kalinā tena sukhaṁ na vindati.  you’ll never find happiness that way. 

Sace ratiṁ nādhigaccheyya tattha,  If you don’t find enjoyment there, 

“iṅgha me tvaṁ, upavāṇa, uṇhodakaṁ jānāhī”ti.  “Please, Upavāna, find some hot water for me.” 

gambhīre gādhamedhati;  in deep waters it finds a footing. 

Yadekako araññasmiṁ,  How do you find enjoyment 

khemaṁ nibbānapattiyā;  for finding the sanctuary, extinguishment, 

Adhigacchasi pāmojjaṁ,  you’ll find gladness, 

Yāva jānāmi yadi vā so samaṇo yadi vā pana so samaṇako”ti.  I’ll soon find out whether he’s an ascetic or a faker.” 

sakka vindemu yaṁ sukhaṁ;  that we might find the happiness 

sakka vindemu yaṁ sukhaṁ;  that we might find the happiness 

na so, bhikkhave, satto sulabharūpo yo namātābhūtapubbo iminā dīghena addhunā.  It’s not easy to find a sentient being who in all this long time has not previously been your mother. 

na so, bhikkhave, satto sulabharūpo yo napitābhūtapubbo …pe…  It’s not easy to find a sentient being who in all this long time has not previously been your father. … 

“na so, bhikkhave, satto sulabharūpo yo nabhātābhūtapubbo …pe…  “It’s not easy to find a sentient being who in all this long time has not previously been your brother. … 

“na so, bhikkhave, satto sulabharūpo yo nabhaginibhūtapubbo …pe…  “It’s not easy to find a sentient being who in all this long time has not previously been your sister. … 

“na so, bhikkhave, satto sulabharūpo yo naputtabhūtapubbo …pe…  “It’s not easy to find a sentient being who in all this long time has not previously been your son. … 

Na so, bhikkhave, satto sulabharūpo yo na dhītābhūtapubbo iminā dīghena addhunā.  It’s not easy to find a sentient being who in all this long time has not previously been your daughter. 

Tesaṁ rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto na labhati otāraṁ na labhati ārammaṇaṁ.  King Ajātasattu of Magadha, son of the princess of Videha, finds no vulnerability, he’s got no foothold. 
Tesaṁ rājā māgadho ajātasattu vedehiputto lacchati otāraṁ lacchati ārammaṇaṁ. 
King Ajātasattu of Magadha, son of the princess of Videha, will find a vulnerability, he’ll get his foothold. 
Tesaṁ māro pāpimā na labhati otāraṁ na labhati ārammaṇaṁ. 
Māra the Wicked finds no vulnerability, he’s got no foothold. 
Tesaṁ māro pāpimā lacchati otāraṁ lacchati ārammaṇaṁ. 
Māra the Wicked will find a vulnerability and will get a foothold. 

“Eso kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo, na ca sā samāpatti sulabharūpā yā tena bhikkhunā asamāpannapubbā.  “That mendicant is very mighty and powerful. It’s not easy to find an attainment that he has not already attained. 

Na ca sā samāpatti sulabharūpā yā tena bhikkhunā asamāpannapubbā.  It’s not easy to find an attainment that he has not already attained. 

Na ca sā samāpatti sulabharūpā, yā tehi bhikkhūhi asamāpannapubbā.  It’s not easy to find an attainment that they have not already attained. 

appeva nāma imassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa antakiriyā paññāyethāti.  And they think, ‘Hopefully I can find an end to this entire mass of suffering.’ 

“Ettha ca te, āvuso yamaka, diṭṭheva dhamme saccato thetato tathāgate anupalabbhiyamāne, kallaṁ nu te taṁ veyyākaraṇaṁ:  “In that case, Reverend Yamaka, since you don’t actually find the Realized One in this very life, is it appropriate to declare:

“Ettha ca te, anurādha, diṭṭheva dhamme saccato thetato tathāgate anupalabbhiyamāne kallaṁ nu te taṁ veyyākaraṇaṁ:  “In that case, Anurādha, since you don’t actually find a realized one in this very life, is it appropriate to declare: 

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso sāratthiko sāragavesī sārapariyesanaṁ caramāno tiṇhaṁ kuṭhāriṁ ādāya vanaṁ paviseyya. So tattha passeyya mahantaṁ kadalikkhandhaṁ ujuṁ navaṁ akukkukajātaṁ. Tamenaṁ mūle chindeyya; mūle chetvā agge chindeyya, agge chetvā pattavaṭṭiṁ vinibbhujeyya. So tassa pattavaṭṭiṁ vinibbhujanto pheggumpi nādhigaccheyya, kuto sāraṁ. Tamenaṁ cakkhumā puriso passeyya nijjhāyeyya yoniso upaparikkheyya. Tassa taṁ passato nijjhāyato yoniso upaparikkhato rittakaññeva khāyeyya, tucchakaññeva khāyeyya, asārakaññeva khāyeyya. Kiñhi siyā, bhikkhave, kadalikkhandhe sāro?  Suppose there was a person in need of heartwood. Wandering in search of heartwood, they’d take a sharp axe and enter a forest. There they’d see a big banana tree, straight and young and grown free of defects. They’d cut it down at the base, cut off the top, and unroll the coiled sheaths. But they wouldn’t even find sapwood, much less heartwood. And a person with clear eyes would see it and contemplate it, examining it carefully. And it would appear to them as completely vacuous, hollow, and insubstantial. For what core could there be in a banana tree?

Yadā kho, bhikkhave, kummo kacchapo soṇḍipañcamānaṁ aṅgānaṁ aññataraṁ vā aññataraṁ vā aṅgaṁ na abhininnāmi, atha siṅgālo kummamhā nibbijja pakkāmi, otāraṁ alabhamāno.  But when that tortoise didn’t stick one or other of its limbs or neck out from its shell, the jackal left disappointed, since it couldn’t find a vulnerability. 
‘appeva nāmāhaṁ imesaṁ cakkhuto vā otāraṁ labheyyaṁ …pe… 
‘Hopefully I can find a vulnerability in the eye, 
Yato tumhe, bhikkhave, indriyesu guttadvārā viharissatha, atha tumhehipi māro pāpimā nibbijja pakkamissati, otāraṁ alabhamāno— 
When you live with your sense doors guarded, Māra will leave you disappointed, since he can’t find a vulnerability, 

Evaṁvihāriñcāvuso, bhikkhuṁ cakkhuto cepi naṁ māro upasaṅkamati labhateva māro otāraṁ, labhati māro ārammaṇaṁ …pe…  When a mendicant lives like this, if Māra comes at them through the eye he finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them. 
labhateva → labhatheva (sya1ed, sya2ed); labhetha (mr) | labhati → labhetha (sya2ed, mr) 
manato cepi naṁ māro upasaṅkamati, labhateva māro otāraṁ, labhati māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
mind he finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them. 
yato kutoci cepi naṁ puriso ādittāya tiṇukkāya upasaṅkameyya, labhetheva aggi otāraṁ labhetha aggi ārammaṇaṁ. 
or from anywhere, the fire would find a vulnerability, it would get a foothold. 
Evameva kho, āvuso, evaṁvihāriṁ bhikkhuṁ cakkhuto cepi naṁ māro upasaṅkamati, labhateva māro otāraṁ, labhati māro ārammaṇaṁ …pe… 
In the same way, when a mendicant lives like this, if Māra comes at them through the eye he finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them. 
manato cepi naṁ māro upasaṅkamati, labhateva māro otāraṁ, labhati māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
mind he finds a vulnerability and gets hold of them. 
Evaṁvihāriñcāvuso, bhikkhuṁ cakkhuto cepi naṁ māro upasaṅkamati, neva labhati māro otāraṁ, na labhati māro ārammaṇaṁ …pe… 
When a mendicant lives like this, if Māra comes at them through the eye he doesn’t find a vulnerability or get hold of them. 
manato cepi naṁ māro upasaṅkamati, neva labhati māro otāraṁ, na labhati māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
mind he doesn’t find a vulnerability or get hold of them.

manato cepi naṁ māro upasaṅkamati, neva labhati māro otāraṁ, na labhati māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
If Māra comes at them through the ear … nose … tongue … body … mind he doesn’t find a vulnerability or get hold of them. 

atho gādhampi nājjhagā.  and find a footing. 
atho gādhampi ajjhagā”ti. 
and find a footing.” 

“Ettha ca te, anurādha, diṭṭheva dhamme saccato thetato tathāgate anupalabbhiyamāne kallaṁ nu te taṁ veyyākaraṇaṁ—  “In that case, Anurādha, since you don’t actually find a realized one in this very life, is it appropriate to declare: 
saccato thetato tathāgate anupalabbhiyamāne → saccato vā tathato vā anupabbhanīyasabhāvo (cck, sya1ed); saccato vā tathato vā anupalabbhiyamāno (sya2ed, mr); saccato thetato tathāgate anupalabbhyamāne (pts1ed); saccato thetato tathāgate anupalabbhamāne (?) | veyyākaraṇaṁ → vyākaraṇāya (bj) 

Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,  you should try to find delight there, 

So tattha passāmi eke samaṇabrāhmaṇe itivādappamokkhānisaṁsañceva kathaṁ kathente upārambhānisaṁsañca:  There I see some ascetics and brahmins speaking for the sake of winning debates and finding fault. 

Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,  you should try to find delight there, 

Agocare, bhikkhave, carataṁ paravisaye lacchati māro otāraṁ, lacchati māro ārammaṇaṁ.  If you roam out of your own territory into the domain of others, Māra will find a vulnerability and get hold of you. 
Gocare, bhikkhave, carataṁ sake pettike visaye na lacchati māro otāraṁ, na lacchati māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
If you roam inside your own territory, the domain of your fathers, Māra won’t find a vulnerability or get hold of you. 

Agocare, bhikkhave, carataṁ paravisaye lacchati māro otāraṁ, lacchati māro ārammaṇaṁ.  If you roam out of your own territory into the domain of others, Māra will find a vulnerability and get hold of you. 
Gocare, bhikkhave, carataṁ sake pettike visaye na lacchati māro otāraṁ, na lacchati māro ārammaṇaṁ. 
If you roam inside your own territory, the domain of your fathers, Māra won’t find a vulnerability or get hold of you.
