Once, the Buddha was in the country of Shravasti, staying at Jetavana Anathapindika's Park. The Buddha told the monks, "There are four kinds of clouds. The first has thunder but no rain. The second has rain but no thunder. The third has neither rain nor thunder. The fourth has both rain and thunder. Just as there are four kinds of clouds, there are also four kinds of people. The first is a person who has thunder but no rain. The second has rain but no thunder. The third has neither rain nor thunder. The fourth has both rain and thunder. What kind of person has thunder but no rain? Here, a monk only recites the sutras, speaking well at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. He has the practice of distinguishing, but only wants to practice and see the essentials. He does not understand the Dharma himself, nor does he know the Dharma as it is practiced. This person is called one who has thunder but no rain. What kind of person has rain but no thunder? Here, someone does not speak the Dharma or sutras, does not speak well at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end. He has no practice of distinguishing, does not want to practice, and does not see the essentials. He only intends to practice in accordance with the Dharma and practice the Dharma. He also practices according to the Dharma, receives the Dharma as it is practiced, and practices accordingly. This person is called one who has rain but no thunder. What kind of person has neither rain nor thunder? He does not speak the sutras, does not speak well at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end. He does not speak of the practice of distinguishing, nor does he want to practice. He does not understand the Dharma himself, nor does he practice the Dharma. This person is called one who has neither rain nor thunder. What kind of person has both rain and thunder? Here, someone speaks the Dharma of the sutras, speaks well at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. He speaks of the practice of distinguishing, and wants to practice. He understands the Dharma himself, and practices the Dharma. He also speaks of the Dharma, and is self-reliant in understanding the Dharma. He practices the Dharma as it is, and knows and understands it himself. This person is called one who has both rain and thunder." |
