Thus have I heard: | 闻如是： |
At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī. | 一时，佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。 |
At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhikṣus, "There are four kinds of clouds. What are the four? There are clouds with thunder but no rain, clouds with rain but no thunder, clouds with both rain and thunder, and clouds with neither rain nor thunder. These are called the four kinds of clouds. There are four kinds of people in the world who resemble clouds. What are the four? There are bhikṣus who thunder but do not rain, bhikṣus who rain but do not thunder, bhikṣus who neither rain nor thunder, and bhikṣus who both rain and thunder. | 尔时，世尊告诸比丘：「有四种云。云何为四？或有云雷而不雨，或有云雨而不雷，或有云亦雨亦雷，或有云亦不雨亦不雷，是谓四种云。世间四种人而像云，何等四人？或有比丘雷而不雨，或有比丘雨而不雷，或有比丘亦不雨亦不雷，或有比丘亦雨亦雷。 |
What kind of bhikṣu is it who thunders but does not rain? There are bhikṣus who recite loudly the sūtras, geya, vyākaraṇa, gāthā, nidāna, vaipulya, avadāna, and upadeśa. They recite these teachings well and do not lose their meaning, but they do not extensively teach them to others. This is called a person who thunders but does not rain. | 「彼云何比丘雷而不雨？或有比丘高声诵习，所谓契经、祇夜、受决、偈、本末、因缘、已说、生经、颂、方等、未曾有法、譬喻。如是诸法，善讽诵读，不失其义；不广与人说法。是谓此人雷而不雨。 |
What kind of person is it who rains but does not thunder? There are bhikṣus who have a dignified appearance, and they know how to come and go, advance and retreat. They cultivate good dharmas without the slightest fault, but they are not well-versed and do not recite loudly. They also do not practice the sūtras, nidāna, vyākaraṇa, gāthā, nidāna, vaipulya, avadāna, and upadeśa, but they receive them from others and do not forget them. They like to follow good friends and also like to teach others. This is called a person who rains but does not thunder. | 「彼云何人雨而不雷？或比丘有颜色端政，出入行来，进止之宜，皆悉具知，修诸善法，无毫厘之失；然不多闻，亦不高声诵习，复不修行契经、本末、授决、偈、因缘、譬喻、生经、方等、未曾有法，然从他承受，亦不忘失，好与善知识相随，亦好与他说法。是谓此人雨而不雷。 |
What kind of person is it who neither rains nor thunders? There are people who have an unattractive appearance, and they do not know how to come and go, advance and retreat. They do not cultivate good dharmas, and they are not well-versed. They do not recite loudly, and they do not practice the sūtras up to the vaipulya. They also do not teach others. This is called a person who neither rains nor thunders. | 「彼何等人亦不雨亦复不雷？或有一人颜色不端政，出入行来，进止之宜，皆悉不具，不修诸善法；然不多闻，亦不高声诵习读，复不修行契经至方等，亦复不与他说法。是谓此人亦不雨亦不雷。 |
What kind of person is it who both rains and thunders? There are people who have a dignified appearance, and they know how to come and go, advance and retreat. They like to study and do not forget what they have received. They also like to teach others and encourage others to receive it. This is called a person who both thunders and rains. This is called, bhikṣu! there are these four people in the world. Therefore, bhikṣu! you should train in this. | 「复有何等人亦雨亦雷？或有一人颜色端政，出入行来，进止之宜，亦悉具知，好喜学问，所受不失；亦好与他说法，劝进他人，令使承受。是谓此人亦雷亦雨。是谓，比丘！世间有此四人。是故，比丘！当作是学。」 |
At that time, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha said, and they joyfully received and practiced it. | 尔时，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。 |
