Chapter 24

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was at Anāthapiṇḍada's Park in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī.

At that time, the World Honored One told the bhikṣus, "In the past, Śakra, Lord of the Devas, told the Thirty-three Heavens, 'When you enter a great battle, if you have a fearful and timid mind, you should look back at my tall and wide banner. If you see my banner, you will be fearless. If you do not remember my banner, you should remember the banner of the King of the Yāma Heaven; by remembering that banner, all fears will be dispelled. If you do not remember my banner or the banner of the King of the Yāma Heaven, then you should remember the banner of the King of the Tuṣita Heaven; by remembering that banner, all fears will be dispelled.'

I now also tell you, if there are bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, or upāsikās who are afraid and their hair stands on end, at that time they should remember my body. This is the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, Perfect in Wisdom and Action, Well-Gone, Knower of the Secular World, Unsurpassed Person, Tamer of Men, Teacher of Gods and Men, Buddha, the Blessed One, who has appeared in the world. If there is fear and the hair stands on end, it will be dispelled.

If you do not remember me, then you should remember the Dharma. The Dharma of the Tathāgata is very subtle and is learned by the wise. By remembering the Dharma, all fears will be dispelled.

If you do not remember me and do not remember the Dharma, then you should remember the noble assembly. The noble assembly of the Tathāgata is extremely harmonious and accomplished in the Dharma: accomplished in precepts, accomplished in samādhi, accomplished in wisdom, accomplished in liberation, accomplished in the wisdom and vision of liberation. Namely, the four pairs and eight groups. This is the noble assembly of the Tathāgata, worthy of respect and service, the field of merit in the world. This is called the noble assembly of the Tathāgata. At that time, if one remembers the Saṃgha, all fears will be dispelled.

Bhikṣus should know that Śakra Devānām-Indra still has lust, anger, and delusion, yet the thirty-three gods are fearless when they think of their lord. How much more so for the Tathāgata, who is free from the mind of desire, anger, and delusion? If a bhikṣu is fearful, it will be dispelled. Therefore, bhikṣus should remember the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṃgha. Thus, bhikṣus should train in this way.

At that time, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha said and joyfully practiced it.
